Removed Comment For a good reason. Pixels are currently the only phones besides iPhones with proper hardware security. Only Pixels support hardware memory tagging, have a secure element ([Titan M2](https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2018/10/building-titan-better-security-through.html)) that supports the [Android StrongBox](https://developer.android.com/privacy-and-security/keystore) and [Weaver API](https://grapheneos.org/faq#encryption), [insider attack resistance](https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2018/05/insider-attack-resistance.html) and [hardware key attestation](https://developer.android.com/privacy-and-security/security-key-attestation). Removed Comment > Mobile Fennec (or pick your poison for any Firefox fork)... I can't get behind Android Firefox/Gecko-based due to their lack of security: > Avoid Gecko-based browsers like Firefox as they're currently much more vulnerable to exploitation and inherently add a huge amount of attack surface. Gecko doesn't have a WebView implementation (GeckoView is not a WebView implementation), so it has to be used alongside the Chromium-based WebView rather than instead of Chromium, which means having the remote attack surface of two separate browser engines instead of only one. Firefox / Gecko also bypass or cripple a fair bit of the upstream and GrapheneOS hardening work for apps. Worst of all, Firefox does not have internal sandboxing on Android. This is despite the fact that Chromium semantic sandbox layer on Android is implemented via the OS isolatedProcess feature, which is a very easy to use boolean property for app service processes to provide strong isolation with only the ability to communicate with the app running them via the standard service API. Even in the desktop version, Firefox's sandbox is still substantially weaker (especially on Linux) and lacks full support for isolating sites from each other rather than only containing content as a whole. The sandbox has been gradually improving on the desktop but it isn't happening for their Android browser yet. Ref: https://grapheneos.org/usage#web-browsing by @FutileRecipe@lemmy.world

Removed Comment The problem is that GrapheneOS really, truly, actually is the only way to get even reasonable levels of privacy on a mobile device right now. That sounds so much like a shill statement, and it seems that way from others too I'm sure. But its true. If you understand anything at all that happens under the hood of an operating system and android in general, GrapheneOS is the ONLY option for actual privacy and security. Removed Comment Read this: https://grapheneos.org/faq#device-support Unlike others, Graphene has very strict requirements when it comes to devices to ensure you're safe. As usual if you’re looking to have any security (Verified boot) GrapheneOS + Pixel phone is the only options. I really don’t get it how come people in places like this are okay with having a phone with all their personal data and logins without verified boot. Stolen / lost phone and game over. Calyx, for instance, isn't as good as GrapheneOS, [they do a lot of snitching on you (including to Google and Mozilla)](https://calyxos.org/docs/guide/security/network-activity/) and they [overlook critical details such as this one](https://gitlab.com/CalyxOS/calyxos/-/issues/370) allowing the OS to contact 3rd parties such as Qualcomm. Other phone brands, let's say Fairphone just don't make thing right. Fairphone guys have been petitioned multiples times to open their platform and/or collaborate with projects such as GrapheneOS and CalyxOS so user can have private and secure phones but they don't care. CalyxOS does support the Fairphone 4 however that's only due to the persistence and reverse engineering efforts of the CalyxOS project / community. If you decide to use it you won't have a secure bootloader anymore [due to a bug in Fairphone's firmware that they choose not to fix](https://calyxos.org/docs/guide/fp4/). That's how "fair" the "Fairphone" really is. Here is more relevant information for you [from here](https://www.qualcomm.com/site/privacy/services ): > XTRA is technology offered by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. in the US and QT Technologies Ireland Limited in the European Economic Area to improve mobile device performance. XTRA downloads a data file from Qualcomm containing the predicted orbits of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) satellites. Using the XTRA data file reduces the time the device needs to calculate its location, thus saving time and battery power when using location-based applications. Newer versions of the XTRA software also upload a small amount of data to us. We use the uploaded data for purposes described in this Policy, such as maintaining and improving the quality, security, and integrity of the service. XTRA uploads the following data types: a randomly generated unique ID, the chipset name and serial number, XTRA software version, the mobile country code and network code (allowing identification of country and wireless operator), the type of operating system and version, device make and model, the time since the last boot of the application processor and modem, and a list of our software on the device Before you say this is the CPU's fault, it isn't, at least on its own. GrapheneOS also deals with this kind of stuff and has patches and options so you can block it. by @TCB13@lemmy.world

Removed Comment Preface: I haven't used GrapheneOS personally, but I've learned as much as I can over the past year. I'll try my best. > If I installed these exact apps “sandboxed”, what exactly does that mean from a user standpoint? Will I have to use a separate account, reboot my phone, etc, or is it a quick process to use the app? Sandboxed only means apps don't communicate with each other* and that if one got breached your entire system remains untouched, only the app gets affected. Installing and using apps is the same as normal Android, no extra steps involved. If you want, you can create a separate profile for "unsafe apps", but this is by no means a requirement and only ensures that if that profile gets breached the other profiles are untouched (profile sandboxing). Rebooting your phone is good practice after installing any software on any device, because some apps need a restart to complete the installation. It is not a requirement. To summarize: Just install the app, open it, and you're done. Apps are sandboxed by default. Edit: The only thing you have to do before installing apps that rely on Google Play Services is to install Google Play Services in Settings (somewhere). This only has to be done once per profile. *There are some exceptions, but for simplicity we'll stick with the textbook definition. > Is there a list of apps that I could browse to find equivalents to the above? Recommendations here are also ok. [AlternativeTo](https://alternativeto.net/) is a good place to find alternatives for certain apps. > I saw that Firefox isn’t exactly private(?) and that Vanadium is better in that aspect but I don’t understand why. Can someone ELI5, and help me see if this is a relevant concern for me? This goes back to sandboxing. Basically, Firefox doesn't play nice with sandboxing. That means if Firefox gets hacked there is a greater risk of infecting the entire phone (which wouldn't happen with proper sandboxing). Vanadium has proper sandboxing, since Chromium (what Vanadium is based off of) was made for Android. Think of Firefox as a metal crate with a few small holes poked in it. Those holes aren't a huge concern, since it would take a very skilled person to climb out of the crate through those small holes, but having holes in the first place is not great since it risks letting a person out of the crate. Chromium is a metal crate without holes, no risk of anyone getting out of that box, no worries. Cheers! by The 8232 Project

Removed Comment AOSP is not a usable product and it is full of Google stuff. GrapheneOS and LineageOS (and derivates) make it usable. GrapheneOS was the first at complete degoogling, others followed, but still have no secure solution for apps needing Google Play. MicroG is proprietary Google code, ran unsandboxed and still unreliable and less secure. So GrapheneOS really is the only usable OS right now, it is FOSS (even in the BSD way that companies could make their proprietary fork) and other projects should base on it and weaken its security to make it run on existing other phones. This is still better than alternatives, but it is a hell of maintenance as all that security causes infinitely more bugs than just using AOSP (which is rock solid) and adding some apps lol. Please donate to GrapheneOS, the project is not yet fully sustainable and they are doing incredible work. by @Pantherina@feddit.de
