European iPhone owners are being shown a new pop-up screen listing alternatives to the Safari browser. The developers of the browsers shown on that screen are torn about the user experience.

i do wish google would go back to the pre-2010 google, but i still can’t imagine using anything but android. everything about apple/iphone just seems infuriating to use.

I kinda like the baseline security advantages. Not that android can’t be better in security, but none of my friends give a shit, and so my iphone friends walk around with better baseline security.

hello ,

ok, here is more than a few posts on this. that said: both have made alot of strides recently, basically the order of consensus is:

  • a google pixel flashed with graphaneos
  • iphone
  • pixel
  • samsung and use adb to remove everything you can.

also, how the devices are setup and used matter alot. other than a pixel + graphaneos, iphones tend to be better at privacy but the devil is in the details. iphones are also more “hygienic” in alot of ways, that you cant see. BUT android is open source for the most part, and are HGIGHLY configurable. and hardware wise has wider variety of choices.

security wise also pixel + graphaneos tends to be top shelf. but iphones, tend to have decent track record. and with proper setup and some addons, it really locks down pretty decently. for other androids, the proper addons, and adb mode to remove all the junk.

support wise? pretty much apple kills it, and everyone else is second and in some cases really distant second or even worse. also google does csam scanning and has blocked folks in false positives and the support structure does not have any way for manual review to get your account back it takes months of fighting them from the reports I have read.

this is all part of the really bad support model thats google. while, google one support of easy things is decent, when it gets real your chances get dicey…

apples support is decent on all levels, not great but decent and in almost all cases better then googles.

data protection? its an apple game now, you can enable adp and the key that encrypts your data is yours and apple documents what key encrypts what data. google, on the other hand, says they encrypt things but the dont really have any good documentation on whats encrypted and whos key encrypts what noor do they allow you to use a key you create like apple does.

backup and recover? while they both do it, apples backup and restore is light years better, googles works, but app level stuff the app devs must create a manifest which tells the backup process what to backup etc. so, over all they both work, its just that apples works better.

applepay vs googlepay, they both work and both are secure, but apples doing full tokenization and googles doing virtual credit card numbers to front for your real card, googles nebales more compatibility with banks easier, apple requires actual setup and key exchanges to onboard each bank. but in the long run while both are considered good, apples is the better way.

IOT and automation, both have a ton of automation, tho googles probably ahead here. but for the iot and home stuff a new standard “matter” will standardize it all so future state wont matter what device you have.

thats it for now.

Apple is a garbage company. If you buy their phones for anything other than iMessage cult needs, it is on you. Buy the cheapest worst iPhone as secondary and keep a main Android phone, if your social life has such a requirement, otherwise respect yourself and buy Android phones.

I’m no fan of apple as a company, but I used android phones for a long time. Mostly because I didn’t want to jump on the apple train. But once I changed jobs and needed to be on my phone a lot more often, I switched to apple for the battery life. I was stuck carrying around an external battery with my android phones. Also, the longevity of the hardware. I’m still on an old iPhone and it still mostly looks and still operates as if it were a more current gen. I always buy used, and I would go through an android phone every year to two years or so. I changed to an apple phone about four years ago and I still have the same one.

I get it, the weird thing I only recently learned about iMessage being some status symbol for teenagers or whatever? That’s fuckin dumb. But there are reasons beyond stupid ones to use apple stuff. Fuck the company, though. I mean…fuck Samsung. And google. Fuck pretty much all companies. But brand loyalty for anything other than fitting your requirements in the product is weird.

The sole reason for getting an iPhone when you get a “job” is to appease colleagues using this fake societal status currency and to show the world that you have “levelled up” in life. There is no longevity or battery life reasoning for it. It is all sugarcoating nonsense. My friends and family do not even have iMessage needs in India, and this is exactly what goes on. Your “fuck XYZ” is also just posturing to hide that fact, like it or not. The moment all your “important” colleagues have newer iPhone models, you will sell this one and get new shiny one to try and keep up with the Joneses.

Um. I dunno what to tell you. I went through two android phones when I started the job. This was back when the screens were only really big. So maybe that was contributing more. But I couldn’t make it though half of the day before both android phones were dying. I can tell you as a person who exclusively used android phones since I had a smart phone (with one, maybe two exceptions I got as hand-me-downs), I’ve never felt any sort of “social pressure” to switch to an iPhone. This is an entirely new concept, because smart phones came out the year I graduated high school, pretty much. And I had never experienced it. Ever.

So are you sure this is a real thing? Not just one of those internet things that people swear they heard someone else say they knew someone who experienced it? Because I’ve been there for pretty much the whole thing. But maybe I aged out of that kind of stupid status shit and this only happens to kids in high school. Because I truly can’t imagine it happening anywhere else. Though I’ve never worked in an office setting, adults acting like clique-y it’s schoolers seem to flock to office spaces, so maybe that’s another reason why I’ve never had this happen to me.

Either way, don’t tell me why I got an iPhone. Who tf are you

Apple is a honey trap. You cannot exit out of Apple ecosystem once you get into it. However, it is very easy to go from Android to Apple. There are plenty other problems with Apple known well here. But the biggest one folks like you will hate to admit is you want to appease other people socially with this fake currency called iPhone. It is shallow, and you willfully encourage it because you do not want to be “left behind”. How do I know this? Every single “job” person that scrambles money to get an iPhone does it for this reason, no exceptions. And that includes people in my family and friend circle.

No, I have no interest in inventing fake respect for people that want to appease and encourage consumerism. Battery life and longevity are not the reasons you got an iPhone for. I guarantee this. You are going to charge an iPhone before the next morning you head out of the house, same way as Android.

The battery life difference pretty much went away several Android versions ago (also when hardware improved).

But, yea, that’s partly why my work phone is an iPhone. I can’t use it for anything but work stuff, and it’s managed by them anyway, so no benefit to using Android for work.

It “just works” for the fundamentals…and that’s what many people want.

Did mozilla manage to compile a version of firefox without webkit for iphones already? Or is it still a webkit wrapper?

Anti Commercial-AI license

Does that actually do anything?

Dunno yet. Probably depends on the outcome of current legal cases against commercial AI companies. Github/Microsoft was sued for example because of CoPilot being accused of using GPL licensed code without adhering to the provisions therein.

Does the Lemmy ToS not have something about having the rights to the stuff you post?

Which federated server owns it? (Seriously not being snarky, just adding mud to the puddle).

I don’t believe there’s any issue actually building the app. However, the app store policies forbid them from shipping it or offering it as a side-loadable option.

Probably the EU will have something to say about that. Hopefully Malus gets another nice fine for that.

Only in the EU the browser companies can use their own engine in iOS, in the USA they only can use Apple WebCrapKit

Is there a paywall free version?

There isn’t a paywall, only a subscription banner which you can close.

true; thanks! on my phone it took up most of the page and i just quickly assumed it was a paywall…

Options?
You mean :
Safari
Safari but it’s not scared of the dark
Safari park fire with a fox for some reason
Edge-ing in Safari park
Opera of the Safari
Safari but with trees
DuckDuckGoing to Safari myself later
You Safari from crippling depression
Safari has layers / it’s all Safari now / Safari is Love, Safari is Life
USSafaRi

Explaining the joke :

I’m making fun of the fact that all browsers on IOS are required to use WebKit.

This article is also only applicable to EU, where (as your link mentions) alternative browsers don’t need to be WebKit. Chrome and Firefox are already working on switching.

Yes but let’s remember everyone that Apple did their “best” in this. If a developer makes a browser that doesn’t use WebKit, then can publish that version only in Europe. For the rest of the world it’s still forced to publish the usual “Safari skin”. Basically doubling the work and the monetary cost of developing a browser.

In Russia, Safari becomes you!

When it was forced to add a search engine default selector to Android in 2019, many of the developers behind alternative options initially criticized the design and denounced Google’s practice of selling slots on the screen through auctions.

Naked corruption.

Also, if your users need a web browser defined in 2024, I’m sorry that your users are fucking morons and old people. The old people will die soon and then you’ll only have the morons left.

The average people don’t know the concept of browser. I saw people using Google search (the app) as a browser. I saw people trying to login in their webmail using Google search (the app), then in order to see what photo they wanted to upload they went back to home by closing the WebView, watching the photo, then using again the Google search app to login in their webmail. Extremely infuriating, I wanted to die.

Jfc. I don’t have much exposure to people younger than me using technology. Family (nieces and nephew) live in another state, so I don’t watch them use phones and tablets. I wonder if my adult niece (who’s very bright) is doing things this way and I just wasn’t aware. Fuck me. I thought we’d be past this by now.

You need to meet more young people they don’t know either specifically because companies like google and apple try to obscure competition by making their way seem like the only way.

Can you please elaborate what you mean “web browser defined in 2024”? Thanks.

he’s referring to the fact that a web browser is a 30 year old technology and there are apparently people still dont know what it is

That I’m not surprised. Look how many companies are shoving apps down our throat while treating web browser users as second class citizens. My sister (21-30 age group) only know to use the “Google app” to search the web on her iPhone while Safari is pinned at the bottom and rarey uses it.

My sister doesn’t do that, but other students at my school are like that

the reason is that corps can harvest massively more data with an application installed directly in your OS, rather than trying to stay within the security confines of the browser sandbox

You can choose brave or firefox. Or maybe you are not too much privacy concious then vivaldi also a good choice. I think these are better than using other browsers from outside store. Maybe thats too a reason why iphone is so smooth and fast.

@Zerush@lemmy.ml

That isn’t the point, it is not that you can select a browser, it’s about that you can select only an another browser after selecting Safari, not in the first setup in a new iPhone (smooth and fast?WTF, every phone in this priceclass is, maybe even more)

Why would Vivaldi be for “not too much privacy concious”?

Because Vivaldi is a closed source web browser.

because it’s chrome

Under the hood, the engine is the exact same engine that powers Chrome. They didn’t fork it, it’s Chromium.

I’m guessing he means “it’s proprietary”.

Chromium isn’t proprietary, it’s open source.

Alb_x_008

Yeah, Chromium is not proprietary. It is a free and open-source software project developed and maintained by Google.

But vivaldi is absolutely proprietary as it’s not open-source.

Vivaldi browser isn’t though.
