I tried my national, online marketplace, but the quality was lacking. In the end, I went for a refurbished laptop. They are often of good quality, cheaper than new (and sometime equivalent) laptops, and have some extra warranty to boot.

Let me write a list of requirements that only a specific phone can fulfill and call that “secure”.

GrapheneOS devs probably.

Like:

At least 5 years of updates from launch for phones (Pixels now have 7) and 7 years for tablets

Why? The image is based on AOSP. Are they going to reverse engineer the releases of other vendors and incorporate whatever fixes are in there?

Complete monthly Android Security Bulletin patches without any regular delays longer than a week

Same as above. It’s like like red hat releasing a security bulletin but a Debian based project has to be up to date with that bulletin. Makes no sense - unless you aim to build upon red hat enterprise Linux (which you won’t).

Inline disk encryption acceleration with wrapped key support

Optimisations are part of the requirement? Come on.

Support for A/B updates of both the firmware and OS images with automatic rollback if the initial boot fails one or more times

How is this not a nice to have?

Seriously, basically what they’re doing is grabbing the newest pixel and setting that as the baseline regardless of whether other phones do things better or worse.

Easy: it only supports pixels. I don’t really care what excuses they have unless it’s “we don’t have enough people”. But that binary " google is most secure so nothing else matters" makes me distrust them.

They are pushing people to give google more money than google could make on their data. I find that highly questionable.

I don’t have time for this but would be great to see the tournament streamed live! (So that I can watch the replay 😅)

With Christian democrats in the majority (preliminary results), it’s doubtful the saga is over.

European citizens laughed when Trump won, but the ridicule turned into laziness. “It can’t happen here, there’s no need to vote”.

I bet we’ll have a right wing parliament and council, but as the Germans say " hope dies last".

Anti Commercial-AI license

Are you in Europe? I haven’t downloaded WhatsApp but it was supposed to get a “third party tab” or something. No idea what happened with that.

Also I made the switch to Signal years ago and told my friends: either you switch or we use email. Everybody hates email, so the good friends installed signal. Acquaintances didn’t and they stayed acquaintances.

Now I also made more friends who care about privacy (or me) enough to install signal.

It’s kinda up to you, which guns you stick to.

P.S Fuck Facebook. I hope the EU fines them for hampering interoperability.

They made a really dumb move and now have to pay for it. I understand their importance but it doesn’t seem like they do - or they are naive enough to believe corpos have good will.

They broke law in such a dumb way, and it’s a pity they put their entire project in jeopardy. My only thought while deciding to donate is “what will prevent them from doing something this dumb again?”

Anti Commercial-AI license

What is it you’re looking for actually? “Best” is subjective to the person’s needs.

For example for me, the best is signal but I would much rather use something decentralised that still allows friends and family to find me easily using my phone number. Stories / client defined groups without notifications are also very useful to me. Also a native desktop app (aka not a locked down browser running some local webpage) would be awesome. But such an app doesn’t exist yet.

What would you need and prefer?

What is up with SimpleX people? It’s like the new Rust or NixOS crowd. Anytime a messenger is mentioned, you can bet there’s a comment about SimpleX in there.

Does Adnauseam it actually work? Just installed it and tried to browse the most ad-infested DDL and porn sites possible : saw all the ads.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Why would steam allow games on their store that don’t work without another third party account or store?

I remember waterfox not being compatible with a few extensions I installed. Do you know if it can just be pointed at a backup of a firefox profile?

Anti Commercial-AI license

the information was “stored on a City network drive”

This sounds like it was one large Excel sheet …

“But I have to use Office” / “I want to play league”, and people won’t care 🤷

Openai will then get metadata to train ai that will be able to use any software and do anything on a computer and understand and mimic all possible stuff. I don’t think they will literally sell the data

How do you expect OpenAI will get the data? And given Microsoft inserting ads all over the place, do you not believe they won’t sell data?

Anti Commercial-AI license

This is what should be happening by default. Company goes under? Opensource all their shit. That should also happen after a set timeframe or at the latest when their stuff isn’t supported anymore.

Good on them for opensourcing it.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Looks like development of such things will have to start happening on the dark web. What a ridiculous conviction.

In its judgement, the court accused him of an “ideology of maximum privacy.”

What the fuck is this kind of reasoning? Is privacy illegal now?

Anti Commercial-AI license

You can’t even sync encrypted chats between devices. Lose your device or have a desktop client? Bye bye encrypted chat!

Anti Commercial-AI license

And “super easy” to use. To get your friend onto it, first you have to host a server, then they have to install a client with an interface from the 90s, activate the XEPs for encryption on their client and ensure the server supports it too, exchange usernames, create an encrypted connection and exchange random codes over another medium to ensure you’re talking to the right person.

NOW you can start chatting with the other person and hope the server doesn’t crash. ECPC

It’s fine to use it for 80% of tasks too and try to contribute to it becoming available for 100% of tasks.

Anti Commercial-AI license

It’s still just guessing.

And thus programming data into existence.

Anti Commercial-AI license

You do realize that a lot of image recognition was done on scaled down images? Some techniques would even blur the images on purpose to reduce the chance of confusion. Hell, anti-aliasing makes text seem more readable by adding targeted blur.

Deblurring is guessing and if you have enough computing power with some brain power (or AI), you can reduce the number of required guesses by erasing improbable guesses.

Anti Commercial-AI license

True, but that just turns into a cat an mouse game. Also, one the photo is up, the background doesn’t change how its blurred with time --> wait long enough and a technique to unblur will be developed.

Anti Commercial-AI license

There are techniques to deblur. It’s even how a prolific child sex offender was caught.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Dunno yet. Probably depends on the outcome of current legal cases against commercial AI companies. Github/Microsoft was sued for example because of CoPilot being accused of using GPL licensed code without adhering to the provisions therein.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Probably the EU will have something to say about that. Hopefully Malus gets another nice fine for that.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Did mozilla manage to compile a version of firefox without webkit for iphones already? Or is it still a webkit wrapper?

Anti Commercial-AI license

That’s what 500 million dollars of google money per year does to a “private” browser :)

Anti Commercial-AI license

Or is it more about “that model was trained on content available under this license, to comply with it, they have to follow it’s terms”?

Close. Creative Commons is a copyleft license with restrictions. The important restriction in this case is not allowing commercial use.

Anti Commercial-AI license

At the moment, I’m just adding the license to my text, but if somebody has something I could copypaste and put into a spoiler to poison AI training, that’d be great.

Anti Commercial-AI license

Insert poison pill here

Nothing here yes!

It’s easier to replace than an email, but I’m not sharing it willy nilly; only with people I want to talk to. I do hope journalists will use it though.
