Back on Reddit, Wiremin was spammed aggressively by people who would regularly insert it artificially into conversations. There was a little cabal of 2-3 people pushing it.
Here are a couple examples, where one person would make a post somewhere and another person would chime in with a recommendation.

FunBelt switches roles and makes a post complaining about Mastodon, and his buddy DealBig8988 plays a different role: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mastodon/comments/z42too/comment/ixp0w5i/

I just can’t take anything seriously that puts such an emphasis on “free speech”.
The blog has a post about “Web 3”, so that’s a bit of a red flag as well.
I love how the top of the page mentions to ditch Facebook and twitter, but then there are links to them at the bottom. I get wanting to spread the word, but it just looks bad.
Also, no source code?
This whole thing just feels sketchy.
The only way to have complete privacy online is to never go online.
Anything else will always be a compromise.
Don’t want to be banned?
Create your own instance.
Don’t want your posts to disappear?
Create your own instance.
Don’t want email verification?
Create your own instance.
Though if you do, enjoy having the trolls flock to your instance, use it to spam the fuck out of everyone else and be de-federated in short order.
How does wiremin deal with illegal content?
How does wiremin deal with spam?
How does wiremin deal with trolls?
As long as you keep registrations closed you don’t need to deal with trolls flocking to your instance and being defederated.
You’re correct. There needs to be a balance. What if someone starts posting say sleazy creep photos of ladies etc? What then? You can’t leave it there. The poor ladies are being sexually assaulted in a way. That content has to come down, and fast. Self hosting is the way to go. You can then have the freedom, and face the responsibility.
It is decentralized. None of the issues you bring up are proof of centralization. If you get banned from one instance or don’t like email verification or whatever your beef is, find an instance with whatever policies you like. If you can’t find such an instance, start your own.
If nobody federates with you because your instance is full of people that got banned from everywhere else, that’s decentralization in action and maybe you should stop to consider if there’s a reason nobody wants to interact with you?
