how are those things not private what?

This setup is telling me you’re spending too much time on computers. Consider a hobby where you make something with your hands, using tools that aren’t electrified.

Also, fuck Proton.

I’d rather use KeePassXC tbh. Local, cloud-free by default password manager.

I honestly wish I could quit Excel - it’s literally the last vestige of Microsoft in my non- professional life, but I find LibreOffice Calc a bit too needlessly different to be able to fully switch across.

I have an Murena account, this include apart of mail, also e/OS, Nextcloud instance, Oonline Office and a lot more, they even sell Phones (FreePhone). substitute practically all Google apps and services. I also use the Portmaster app (FOSS, Windows and Linux), it includes optional (paid OpenSource) an SPN service, which is an multichannel VPN

Interestingly i could never invest the time into nextcloud but I can advocate for trying open models in CLI form for anyone looking for good agentic options

I’m using pi + tensorx + glm 5.2 with some pretty good results. EU hosted and competitive prices

unfortunately every foss maps app I’ve tried has been subpar. all the ones based on open street maps can’t even go to proper addresses, it takes you to the street and you just have to look around for it. at least here in the us. so far magic earth has been better but it still doesn’t work with Public transit so I have to have a separate maps app in my private space anyways.

Organic Maps is doing the job for me

Not all, I use Cartes (French, OpenSource) which is pretty complete. GPS, public transport, bicycle, by feet, distances, restaurants, shops, administrations, etc… One of the most complete I found, it use Data, apart from OSM, also from NASA, Mapl and Citybic.

also, not to get nitpicky (I promise) but hasn’t /e/os criticized people for wanting privacy and security and said it’s for criminals? which I found very ironic of them given their own operating system

Not really. Their CEO has said that privacy and keeping data away from big tech is their priority and security, while important, is not the tip of the spear for them.

He phrased it poorly (“we’re not developing a phone so a paedophile can evade justice”) but people immediately misrepresented it as “The only people who care about security are paedos and crims”. Graphene went hard on them with a big FUD campaign that got a lot of people upset. All he meant was that people with very extreme threat models would be better looking elsewhere.

Very much a storm in a teacup.

Yes they have. It’s also very late to security updates and is mostly just Lineage plus their own cloud services.

So what’s that App Lounge all about? I can find the GitLab and it’s related projects but nowhere how to install it, the APK file is on the releases (with 9 stars that’s not a great sale already) but they all have null pointers to files missing and can’t be downloaded

it’s the default on /e/OS. i have no clue if you can download it otherwise. but Aurora Store, F-Droid, Droidify and Obtanium are all good too. (assuming obtanium is good bc ive heard the name alot of times)

Heard about Obtanium too but I’m good with my current pick, still thanks for the info

It’s part of /e/os. Basically it attempts to roll the functions of FDroid and Aurora store into one. I dont think it’s made for distribution outside their OS. For anyone on other platforms, Fdroid and Aurora will fill the same roles just fine.

Thanks for the info

It’s part of the /e/os suite. It’s tied somehow to the eos version you have running. And if I’m not wrong, your apps from applounge won’t update after a certain point in time (or official android patch ?), until you upgrade the /e/os version.

All in all, it’s not meant to be a standalone store, from my understanding

Thanks for the information

CoMaps is great and all but man. Living in an urban environment without traffic details is brutal.

For me, I would personally make the adjustment:

chatgpt —> NOTHING

I’d rather go my whole life with people ridiculing me for not using genAI then hand over my status as a person to any form of genAI.

yeah, imo search engines have gone completely to shit. and sometimes AI is literally the only way to find certain things without wasting a lot of time. but i do try to use it as little as possible

I’d rather waste time than water

Well that is good we don’t have Gen AI yet if ever. I can’t imagine how bad that well be look at what the shut we have now has caused.

Im fine with local only, but theres so many people that just vomit out exactly what claude says.

Or googles AI overview.

Do you feel that way about the other algorithms you do use? Nearly all code we do use was compiled and the compiler makes it’s own decisions on how to convert abstract code into assembly or binary. Do you have anything against machines making decisions on that conversion?

But that is not the same. I can compile the same code with the same compiler and get the exact same code. This is not true of AI.

Analogies don’t have to be one to one. I originally got this analogy from Linus Torvalds

Here’s another

Compilers ain’t a problem for me. Compilers aren’t enabling people to claim writing they never wrote as their own so they can sell “books”. Compliers aren’t generating false information on purpose in order to trick me because it was built to be a gaslighting yes man¹. Compilers aren’t deleting anything from certain files to whole directories¹ off my system unless I tell them to.

I don’t have to worry about a compiler trying to steal all my data¹ in order to please braindead C-suites trying to replace all humans with clankers. So I have zero issues with a good genAI free compiler.

¹ unless they have been compromised/my system has been infected

I mean it does allow people to claim code they didn’t necessarily write is there’s. It seems that your issues aren’t to do with LLMs fundamentally but specific use cases some individuals have chosen. Like you don’t fundamentally have an issue with the algorithm itself.

What the hell are you talking about. Compilers do not insert code that wasn’t put there. Now if your saying well you wrote C and the machine is running assembler then you are a moron.

If I’m a moron then so is Linus Torvalds since I literally stole the analogy from him. Generally speaking though these are all just algorithms and the issues people have aren’t about this particular algorithm but the ways in which some people or companies are using the algorithm. It’s a bit like saying you hate the internet because some people use the internet to do very harmful things.

Here’s another

I will concede on the algorithm. Can’t get too mad at advanced maths, but I can get mad at the lazy people using it for nefarious purposes or just because they’re lazy.

I mean may as well say you’re mad at the internet because people use it for nefarious purposes as well. This is usually what I find about all these debates around AI and LLMs or NNs. It’s more so people being legitimately upset at actions taken by some individuals or companies more so than any hatred for the technology itself but they conflate the two effortlessly. Like we’re aware of how strange it sounds in different cases when that’s done but for some reason with AI most don’t see this issue in their argument.

Not everyone use llm’s for programming.

I have a feeling you didn’t understand the question I was asking. Ilms are just one type of algorithm and data structure. There’s other algorithms nearly all programers use to compile symbolic code Into assembly or machine code (binary), they’re called compilers. Anyone who isn’t writing assembly or machine code directly is likely using a compiler.

Your question is confusing to me, I know what compilers are but I’m not sure how that is super related to llm’s. I was just saying that people use llm’s for reasons aside from generating code.

ooh wait nevermind, I realise what you meant now. Your comparing compilers to llm’s since they both are algorithms that turn an input into an output. Is this what you meant?

I got the comparison from Linus Torvalds talk but yes and depending on the compiler and it’s use the output might not be so deterministic. More accurate to the point I’m actually making is is that these are all algorithms and the issues people have with AI isn’t anything about the algorithms or the technology itself but the ways in which some people and companies are using it. May as well say you hate the internet because some people and some companies are using it to do very harmful things.

Here’s another

Interesting, I can see how the idea that llm’s are just another layer of abstraction like compilers. Although this doesn’t really justify using them and that unfunny joke of “I bet your code was written by a compiler” just doesn’t really make sense. It’s not like we should start writing all our code in python, for example.

What would justify using them? For many I talk to they have an irrational hatred because of how some people and companies have used them so now it’s like a prejudice. That is not matter what they dislike neural networks

The guy is an idiot and is comparing compilers to llms.

If I’m an idiot then so is Linus Torvalds the creator or the Linux kernel.

Here’s another

I’m not sure Lemmy belongs in this list. Isn’t all the content posted here fully visible to anyone, anywhere?

Yeah social media on a privacy list is a bit odd. I think the point is a lemmy instance (probably) won’t log your IP and report you to the feds for any cool flock activities you have going on (but don’t quote me on that).

What is Cash+iDeal? Definitely don’t see anything on f droid and words are generic enough to not provide any results on search.

cash is just real money, like coins y’know? and iDeal/Wero is a Dutch (soon european) payment provider

Cash is just the physical cash and iDEAL is a payment system in Netherlands.

Oh lol, my brain couldn’t compute anything on the list is physical solution. Thanks

I much prefer Kagi over DuckDuckGo

An aggregator like SearXNG or degoog is the way to these days imo. Any individual search engine will have its own share of problems, whether that’s privacy or AI nonsense or just bad results.

iDEAL is Wero now 🤗
