If that’s a problem, I’d hate to see the solution

Well I also have 2 Toyotas and boarding a 67 crowd mower

Somewhat related but does anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket gps trackers (not navigation)? I drive maybe once a week so I’m looking for something with a battery life longer of 10+ days

Look for any of them that wire directly to your battery and don’t need to be charged. A GPS pinger uses very little energy so you shouldn’t need to worry about much battery drain

I want to say look into LoRaWAN devices but I don’t have the experience to really say that. I’ve been looking for something similar for my car.

My car got stolen, recovered, repaired (5 weeks!) and then two weeks later two guys with guns tried to carjack me so…it’s become important to me lol

I hate driving but I cannot see my family out in the boonies without a car

dude where do you live

In a once beautiful, quiet neighborhood that apparently got really dangerous in the past year for no fuckin reason.

Sounds like a land of burgers

They come right out and say they can collect and share your sexual activity, health diagnosis data, and genetic information

Dude what the fuck

I would like to know specifically how a car company can collect sexual activity and genetic information. The genetic information thing really sounds like FUD.

Is it FUD if it’s a direct quote from Nissan’s privacy policy?

I’m sure it’s there and I’m sure they wish they could get that info. I just don’t see how they could beyond making some pretty wild inferences.

I could see certain accessibility settings of cars such as color blind settings, bold text, even physical personalization ordered for the car based on hereditary or not genetic conditions falling into that category.

Some companies will find that information useful for ads I suppose.

Maybe from genetic testing companies that sell that to data brokers, which a car company could enrich your personal information with?

Not to mention some of the other information listed like sleep patterns. How do they get that data?

Android auto maybe

Do you not nap while commuting?

I’ve been asleep since 2019

What would you need to do to make a car dumb? Remove all connectivity chips? ECU swap? Flashing custom software?

Usually, the efficient goal oriented are dumb enough like ebikes. I am guessing investing in Aptera would be a great option for a to b daily driving. Aside from that, custom computer to control the car is the most logical step until you get into electric or hybrid type vehicles where the aftermarket is not big enough. Removing wireless connectivity fuses are another option but I don’t know if a service shop will connect the fuses defeating your privacy. Also a phone app will always be anti privacy. Make sure to get products without apps or wireless connection capabilities as manufacturers start preventing you from using products without registering it with an app first.

Feel like it could be as simple as removing a fuse (or fuses) in some cases.

My LEAF has a 3G radio. It’s useless now. If it were still connected, I could yank it; you can have any shop do the same.

I’d think just unhooking the antenna would do it, it might stop working eventually though

Buy a simple car

Thats the easy route, but i had hoped it would be possible to do something with newer cars. Looks like old ones might fall out of favor of laws in the future.

I’ve got a 2005 Subaru forester. No privacy problems so far

My car is a 2015 and I’m in no hurry to replace it, but I can’t help but worry about the future. I like replacing the head unit in my cars, and it’s going to be a worse and worse option as time goes on, potentially resulting in losing actually useful features.

think of all the trashed, cluttered garages those sensors scan and photograph every day

…or not, since those trashed, cluttered garages usually can’t be parked in.

As mentioned in another comment, the link takes us to the parent page where you can choose a brand (and presumably then, a model) of car to learn about.

I noticed that Mazda isn’t included among their brands so I sent a suggestion, thank you! I didn’t know that they provided privacy support for so many devices - they even have the Nintendo Switch in there and all kinds of categories: https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/

I also noticed Mazda wasn’t on there. Doesn’t even come up in a search. Does that mean they’re more respectful of privacy?

It means that they haven’t reviewed them.

No, it means they haven’t investigated them. If they had they would include them on the list and tell you the details.

your link is broken and does not take us directly to an article :/

You have to click on a brand and there is the research about their cars.

Please just direct link to articles; or provide per-brand links to individual articles. Some of us use browser settings that do not fully render pages because Javascript cannot always be trusted completely to run without guardrails.
