Is it a reason to hate the GrapheneOS project? Pixel phones are simply the best Android devices for security. You should hate other phone manufacturers that don’t care at all.

You don’t need to give money to Google, it’s trivial to find a second-hand.

It builds on devices’ source code published by ASUS. The is no data sharing with ASUS.

Merlin’s privacy disclosure:

The only outbound connection made with me by this firmware is when the firmware checks for availability of a new version.

Have you tried Signal recently? On Android it’s very well polished.

In fact I believe it’s a shame that not more people use such a beautiful app, regardless of privacy and security implications.

the data is out there

Where? GMaps sources this data from each of its users.

HERE WeGo has traffic data but of course, as in Google Maps, it sources from other users of the same app.

If not many people use HERE, then the data is also not reliable.

Exceptions being obvious things like bathrooms

You arbitrarily decided what is “obvious”. For me it’s obvious for my right to privacy to be observed all the time.

I don’t want my face to be sent to i.e. Amazon just because I am a courier delivering a package to your house.

Because the United States are the only country in the world.

In Italy it is illegal to share recordings in public without the recorded people’s consent.

“Cops” are public servants, as such it is always allowed to record and share.

The European Court of Human Rights is independent from the European Union, and viceversa. They are not related.

I am not expecting security from it, just complete decentralisation.

I use Jami daily. The pro is that it is completely decentralised: it doesn’t need a server to run, all communications are over DHT. The cons is that not all messages are delivered instantly, and both sender and recipient need to be online at the same time.

I still disagree. Arbiters of factual information can’t be companies, and can’t be governments. Currently we don’t have a proper arbiter; I would argue that finding one isn’t “hard”, it’s straight-out impossible.

On the same line, who is it up to to decide what does it mean to pursue true knowledge?

I strongly believe that censorship is not the answer- it’s not the answer to anything. Let’s say you are in a circle of strangers, and one of them starts shouting to the others that you did something horrible. The solution to this problem is not to kill him, but to present a different source of information that can stand more stable than is (ex: I wasn’t there at that time, I have history of not doing that kind of stuff, you claim this for your own gain, …).

The solution to ignorance is not to shut down dissident opinions or theories, as flawed or dangerous as they may be, but to be open to educate.

In this specific instance pertaining to search engines, the correct way to make misinformation available would be to provide appropriate disclaimers with reputable and independent sources, not to censor.

Leaving out all other conspiracy theories, since I may agree with some of them, the claim that the moon landing was staged strikes me as mindblowing over everything else. You just need to look at the Moon wath a telescope to disprove it, no need to believe to any scientist.

They need to earn money somehow, and the deal with Microsoft is the least privacy-invasive option they found.

I suggest overall to use SearxNG, but Qwant isn’t bad.

A second-hand phone is always worthier

There are other ways to express this than “your suggestion sucks, let’s do it my way instead”.

And even not caring about privacy, Signal is an instant messaging application, Instagram is a social media around photos. What is the better chouce to text your roommates, I wonder.

It’s expected, but I’d be sorry for them. To move the company and the people would require big expenses.
