Maybe

I believe that one should leave those platforms for personal reasons. Not as a statement to those companies.

I left because I don’t like being tracked or being forced to accept being tracked. I did not leave because I wanted them to stop tracking their users or to show them that i don’t like them doing it.

Imo these companies won’t change the way they operate and even if they did, I wouldn’t trust them to have done so. They will always find loopholes and workarounds to get to what and where they want.

I hope so - it doesn’t seem to work with platforms like facebook, twitter, reddit. We have had massive exodus from those too, but they keep growing and making money. People don’t value privacy, if it gets in the way of convenience, socializing and entertainment

With some workplaces using Facebook messenger even, to plan shifts, you practically get forced to have accounts places where you wouldn’t

Basically, most of the internet won’t work right, if you don’t allow the browsers to track you. I have had a very strict Firefox setting and kept having to create exception to every site I visited just get in.

You can boycot the sites but in the end, you’ll be missing out on everything really

The Cursed! This free content update for all owners will be available to play starting this week on October 23, 2024, and will last through to November 6, 2024

uBlock origin, can access the page fine, without showing any promts. I have more or less all filters turned on though (cookie popups, social media trackers etc)

Actually they still track you, they just don’t share the information with advertisers. This is hte “pay or ok” model of blackmailing users to accept cookies and tracking. More or less what Facebook did last year, but Facebook charged a price tag that was higher than what Netflix costs! In the EU, this is not what was intended, and is currently being redefined

https://www.edpb.europa.eu/news/news/2024/edpb-consent-or-pay-models-should-offer-real-choice_en

In Europe you have to opt in to newsletters. Companies are not even allowed to have the opt in field pre checked!

You activelly need to tick the opt in check box.

When you ask them to delete your account they should delete your account. There is no excuse for them to have your contact information if you dont have an account with them

This I would reply and CC my local data authority at the same time, asking for the info that the data authorities need when you file a complaint

Company official name, address, registration number and preferred means of communication with the data authority (phone number, email address, post adress)

I thought it was a title to an article but it turn out it was someone who mistook Lemmy for a search engine

Jetpack It made 5 mil last year for making wordpress better for the ones who are willing to pay

Yeah i use it for ESO and it works well for me. I am just wandering why this is posted here

Well, IMO ads are ads. Targeted ads are not better just because they are relevant or can be ignored

Exactly, I was ok with Facebook showing me untargetted ads. But when they removed the option and forced me to either accept targeted ads or pay €30 a moth to go free, i deleted my accounts on all of metas platforms. Its more lonely but i get to read a lot more books and have less futile discussions

I was surprised to hear ads at the end of audio books where they mention more books by the author or similar books by the publisher

I am sorry to ping you again, superior user, but i feel obliged to mention that it had been a far smaller inconvenience for you to list the three alternatives that you meant, instead of suggesting people look it up and then guess what you meant. especially when you suggest that Nord is not one of them. You insinuate that you have some knowledge others dont.

Teasing it like this only proves your personality not your knowledge

I tested this. but it only brings up the page info for me, but with no option or way to get to the area where you add a site to the exceptions (in the security tab)

I kind of find this to be a good thing. Clean up in the conversations and restart the good ones. I don’t mind losing chat history. It was practically not even searchable anywaybso nonuse for it as I see it

I haven't deletes my Facebook account yet because I need the messenger functionality. But I haven't used or accepted Facebook terms from November about targeted ads or paid subscription. Now though, I don't need the Facebook account any more. Here are some long screen dumpsnof further information I was also verybpleased to find an option in Facebook thatbleta you transference pictures fr your accounts to drop box (or other cloud storage services) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/1e3deffb-d9bd-42ce-bc46-c1ca21e553da.jpeg)

Do you know of an easy way to add sites to the exception list? I really like how easy itnia to “fireproof” sites with a press of a button but in Firefox it takes quite a lot more.

I might have misunderstood this but is Android really trying to push this as tracking as a privacy upgrade, simply because it let's us choose which of our interests we want advertisers to have access to?

Even threatening with a GDPR request was taken seriously by them half a year æg when I deleted my account.

How can it be a valid option when it is only available on android and the reason why OP is having this issue, is that the niece is on an iPhone?

WTH dude… You can send letters. Unfortunately it’s IRL only and isn’t at all what you asked for

Thanks! I’ve noted all the suggestions and will try them out when I feel ready to try a different browser.

I just assume it’s one single user with too much time and too many accounts.

Thanks for the concern. At the end of the post I have added an update to this. It turns out that I had turned off hardware acceleration on the DDG browser and that was the reason it was tapping on my CPU instead

Not as easily it seems but to be fair, i haven’t looked too much into it. In DDG I get asked if I want to fireproof the site, when I type in any information. Then I just press flame icon to torch everything else multiple times a day.

Sorry - I don’t expect commenters to go through replies to other commenter’s so I thought it was the most reasonable thing to do

Oh ok. I didn’t know.

On DDG it’s an icon on the irl bar where I can just mark any website that I want it to remember. I them just torch everything else multiple times a day.

What I like with DDG is that I can clear all cookies, cache, history etc except for the sites that i have “fireproofed”. Also all the tempting plugins that make life easier on FF are too tempting, and I always end up running many of them. The lack of such on DDG keeps things simple

What I like with DDG is that I can clear all cookies, cache, history etc except for the sites that i have “fireproofed”.

I have been very happy with DuckDuckGo, and it has helped me break free of routines that I did not feel safe with. Especially the small flame icon that would clear all history, cookies and cache from websites that are not "fireproofed" was great! But today I had to do a quick example on Tinkercad (3D browser design tool) and it was so slow! I thought that my PC maybe was busy doing something (yeah its an older PC but not THAT old), but when I open the same page on my now parked Opera browser, everything went smoothly. I am ok with using Opera, or any other browser for 3D work, as I don't really do all that much of it, but I just feel gutted to find out that my now favorite browser sucks so bad at something, not to mention the Microsoft Edge processes when that is the last of any browser that I would choose to use EDIT: I found out that this was due to hardware acceleration was off, on my DuckDuckGo browser. I had turned it off, because the fonts on websites looked blurry when it was on. The solution was to turn off antialising on the Nvidia control panel, and restart the PC. It is now working well!

Facebook on separate device
I have come to realise that I can't just leave Facebook and Instagram without it influencing the stuff that I really care about. Most of my hobbies, interests, friends, clubs etc are on Facebook, and leaving the platform would affect the level of involvement that I can achieve. So my question is: would it be an option to run Facebook and Instagram on a device that I don't use for anything else than that? I won't being it with me anywhere and I won't use it for communication, searches, browsing etc. Only Facebook and Instagram. I still haven't accepted the terms of the meta platform and as accepting them would allow to track on any device, I have uninstalled on all devices. So I am thinking of installing the apps on a spare device and just letting them be isolated there. I realise that they will still track my activities on the apps though, but I believe that the few weeks I've had without the app, has taught me that I dont need to browse the fees. Just check the communities that i am involved in and put again Any thoughts or advice on this?

I had turned targeted ads off, on Facebook and Instagram. I still got ads but they were not targeted based on my data. I could live with that Today I got a popup requiring me to pick an option of either accepting targeted ads or pay the equivalent of €13/$14 for an addfree experience across all meta platforms.
