a privacy service…

so why is your community in discord, where multiple countries’ residents have to submit govt ID…?

Good luck convincing anyone not to use discord it’s like they’ve all given up on anything else if they are already using it

I argued this with them numerous times. They don’t care. They insist that discord gives them the moderator tools they need to moderate. They hate matrix and want to be done with it. So, that means giving up everyone’s privacy to use a shit platform that does everything it can to collect user data and go against what its all about.

Tbh matrix also sucks (less)

You’re right, it does. But yes, it does suck much less than discord. Discord is and is becoming more and more of a privacy nightmare.

Devils advocate - this project will live and die by it’s support. As much as people hate it, the discord userbase is huge, you’re more likely to reach more people and hit growth.

I agree with this, though I think they could do like Graphene and others do where they have a discord for the privacy-curious and a Matrix Space for the real-heads

Call me old-fashioned but I like cash.

Hi old-fashioned

I might be getting old, but I find tapping with just the physical card simple enough that I don’t want to bother with these digital solutions… If some truly private and open solution comes I’d happily use it, but I think hell freezes sooner… 😀

My issue has been places that have made it hard to get a physical card, like transit cards can be a pain to get to an office during the hours they’re open and wait in line forever. You either have to pay cash or use Google Wallet/Apple Pay but credit/debit cards aren’t supported. It seems like it’s becoming less common, thank goodness. But still run into it here and there. I’m glad both Seattle and San Francisco transit systems now all accept credit/debit cards, though I don’t really trust the security of those transactions as much, so I still kept my transit cards. Also, though, it makes a big difference that at least those two systems will just wave you on in case the system or your card is not working properly. Some cities the drivers still have to enforce and will turn you away if something technical goes wrong and you don’t have cash.

The only benefit is that I’m already dicking around on my phone to avoid small talk, so it’s right there.

I bet you have forgotten your wallet more times than you’ve forgotten your phone

I don’t forget stuff (yet). On the contrary, I remember when I was using my phone, leaving my wallet home, because “i didn’t need it” and then it for some reason didn’t work and it was quite embarrassing. Happened to me more than once, so I ended up carrying my wallet with me anyway… Technology have a weird tendency to stop working at the exactly wrong time! And I say that as a long time developer. 😅

Might be useful from a compatibility point of view if things like Play Integrity aren’t required. Using privacy as the main selling point seems a bit dishonest however, since apparently they’re trying to be yet another bridge to the traditional payment system.

Not FOSS. Connects to the internet. Yeah, I ain’t putting my debit card into that, even if I can disable the network access as a Graphene user.

Yeah that’s why you use a credit card instead

It’s not FOSS but parts of its implementation can be seen here https://github.com/walt-app
