Hello everyone, I’d like to set up remote desktop for the work computer of a relative of mine (Her employer gave me permission to do so). I am unsure about the best way to go:

  • Should I try to enable port forwarding on the router, make them choose a strong password, and use the built-in Windows service?
  • Or is it better to use a free (as in price) external program? My main candidate was Rustdesk, but after a bit of searching I found some controversies, what do you think about it?

If necessary I can resort to a closed-source solution.

Thanks to you all in advance.

Seems like RustDesk is still the most trusted RD service, so I’ll start with it, then I will look more into self hosting Tailscale/Netbird and maybe make the switch.

if it’s windows i would use rdp over tailscale. don’t expose it to the internet.

Ill throw Netbird in as a choice. FOSS, privacy respecting, and doesn’t require port forwarding.

If someone recommends you Tailscale I would suggest Headscale btw for the connection.

I would say that depends on whether you only need access to the 1 PC or the entire network.

If just the 1 PC then I recommend RustDesk:

Otherwise I agree with @BlastboomStrice that Tailscale is the way to go.

Both options are free, open source, fast and have the option to self host.

Yes, it’s just one computer

I would go with RustDesk then which I also personally use to support family and friends where there’s only 1 PC they might need help with.

I found that tailscale (to tunnel traffic to remote devices) with even sunshine (yes, the remote gaming application, just pick the default “desktop” option to stream the desktop) works very well.

And tailscale has an option to transfer files I think.

Ideally you’d probably selfhost tailscale (with headscale) or netbird with a vps+domain, but too much of a hassle for such case.

I’ll look a bit into it later, thanks
