Very interesting, had no idea this was a thing! Thanks for sharing.

Ah I wasnt not aware, the link provided by @anamethatisnt, seems to have cleared this up too!

Right so it is owned by Defense Information Systems Agency… thats… scary…

[Solved] How can I verify the ownership of an IP-address? - 26.26.26.x
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/14131393 Recently discovered the following two addresses in my DNS-filter, `26.26.26.1` and `26.26.26.2`. How can I confirm that these belong to? These are both public-ip addresses but seems to be owned by the US Military? If I look at https://www.abuseipdb.com/check/26.26.26.2, it says it belongs to: - ISP: DoD Network Information Center - Type: Military - Country: US. What does this mean? As far as I've researched, its got something to do with Socks protocol? This Github repo I found seems to be using it too, but why is it used? If anyone knows, id very much appreciate your help. https://github.com/PeterCxy/SocksDroid/blob/master/app/src/main/groovy/net/typeblog/socks/SocksVpnService.groovy edit1: formatting edit2: Found an additional GH Repo that use the same IP addresses for something called **V2RayVPNService**: https://github.com/2dust/v2rayNG/blob/master/V2rayNG/app/src/main/kotlin/com/v2ray/ang/service/V2RayVpnService.kt edit3: This blogpost explains it quite well. https://blog.erratasec.com/2013/12/dod-address-space-its-not-conspiracy.html > The reason all these address spaces are DoD is because that's really the only source of unused IPv4 addresses left. All IPv4 address ranges have been assigned. But, the DoD has been assigned 20% of the IPv4 address space, but most of it is used within the DoD, on their own private networks, and is not routable to the outside world. Thus, if you are looking for a large chunk of "private" addresses that won't suddenly one day be assigned to Akamai or Amazon (and thus, explode in your face), then DoD addresses are the way to go.

I second this, got the same setup and works wonders!

If you are into selfhosting then there is a great tool for this called StirlingPDF.

https://stirlingtools.com/

Not seen one of my favourite projects listed yet, so Jellyfin!!

Edit, forgot this was about privacy. Wopsi. But they do have better privacy than say plex… If that counts 😅

Aslo more expensive than Bitwarden for example, should u want to pay for premium.

Every time I have to install Windows, even in VMs I install Atlas with it, getting rid of all bloat and unnecessary shit. But even with that it’s a horrible experience compared to what KDE and Gnome deliver.

Yeah wasn’t gonna allow it, but crazy that there is no additional information or link to explain further. Most lesser tech savvy / privacy focus people would click this without hesitation, that is what bothers me the most…

I have to use certain Microsoft apps for work, so I strictly only use the web versions as I am on Linux. However, just seen this setting pop up in Word while working on a document. I wonder what in specific they would change, considering i am on Firefox. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there an actual good reason for me to allow this, and if did what would it change?

I just came across this one too, seems rather promising! https://forwardemail.net/en

Ah my bad, it doesn’t have that itself, however: there is Thunderbird 🐦

Out of curiosity, what service was this?

Just wanted to chip in and say, what a great comment! 👌

No issues with Freetube here either, never had any either. Running most things on defaults.

I believe it’s more about what you do to the system, than about each box you can buy.

I have not heard of any one android TV box being more privacy respecting than others. In the end they’re all running Android TV. However there are a bunch of things you can do to debloat your system to minimise processes etc… Y nvidia shield at least let’s me disable any system app I want. You can ofc sideloads apps, for example you can:

  • Projectivy Launcher, instead of stock launcher. This launcher looks alot better and also avoids the new fullscreen ads.
  • SmartTube, instead of YouTube. It’s YT but without ads and has sponsor block.

If you want true privacy than you’re gonna want a Linux PC of any sort connected to the TV instead.

As title suggests, how do I go about stopping my phone from scanning my surroundings for extra devices? Note: my phone was already connected to my own headphones.

I just got the Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) model on sale during BF sale, totally a game changer for us! Although some tweaks are needed when first setup, such as ProjectIvy to replace AndroidTV bloat screen and Button Remapper to remap Netflix button on the remote to whatever else you want it to launch.

Personally have this too, but would recommend against it as the support for Linux is tragic.

Sadly not a whole lot of good options, other than the other one already mentioned here.

However I’ve got my hopes up for the upcoming keyboard app by FUTO. (Louis Rossman announced it on his YT channel a few vids back )

Thanks, wasn’t aware of that 😇

Redirect Youtube.com to Freetube desktop app?
So, recently got freetube downloaded, and love every bit of it. But I still forget myself, and put youtube into the url bar... So, is it possible to redirect Yt to Freetube instead? Thanks

Recently got invited to try the very new Port87 email, been working great so far! https://port87.com

ExpressVPN is owned by Kape Technologies, which was previously named Crossrider. And Crossrider was a plugin development platform that allowed users to distribute ad injection software, which some considered malware. (Kape did not respond to a request for comment.) Kape also previously operated software called Reimage, which is said to enhance computer performance but has been reported to signal false positives on its security tests in order to sell its premium service. Teddy Sagi, the owner of Kape Technologies, was listed in the Panama Papers as a sole shareholder of at least 16 offshore companies—primarily real estate—established through Mossack Fonseca, according to Haaretz. In 1996, 16 years before he acquired Kape Technologies, Sagi was sentenced to nine months in prison for bribery and fraud, according to the Financial Times.

Yeah I dont, as I wrote in the description, im just researching different providers.

Hahah thats me! :P (lemmy is a small world) My main focus is most likely going to be free vpn’s and the risk of using them. I have to limit the scope quite a bit and want to cover areas that are not that well properly documented… yet…

But thanks for the tips! I will defo read up on it and see wheter or not I can have a “alternatives” section towards the end.

Edit -> This research paper might feed your temporary needs :P https://www.usenix.org/system/files/usenixsecurity23-ramesh-vpn.pdf

Ah okay that might justify the camera permission, although personally wouldn’t see the need to have that.

I used to hink RestorePrivacy was good, but they’re shilling NordVPN and these other ‘famous’ VPNs too, also with affiliate links, so no longer trust them. Also from what I’ve read previously their authours dont seemt to take critique very well…

This link works instead of the one OP sent, seems like a server issue from Mozilla right now?

I am fully aware of what vpn services to use and not. I am not using Express VPN, I am simply doing research for a master thesis, when I came across these results from Express VPN. If you have any ideas or corrections, please let me know why a VPN provider would need to have access to these permissions. Screenshot is from Exodus service, which let's you view what exactly perimissions and trackers each app uses. You can check out the results and the tool for yourself here: https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/com.expressvpn.vpn/latest/ [Link to Image](https://i.imgur.com/R6NaCvq.png)

I quite like the blog posts from some companies like Proton and Tutanota, often post “awareness” blog posts and ut privacy etc…

Yeah mb, windows isn’t really apart of my life anymore, luckily, so low key forgot about it when writing 🙃

Yeah I did not meant Windows hahah, thats a totally different ball game :P Only meant different distros

I dont think there is much difference in what OS you choose when it comes to this question, more about how you configure your OS and how you install applications. That being said, I also daily drive OpenSuse Tumbleweed and it’s so far my favourite OS, Yast, Zypper and Opi are amazing to have in ones toolkit 😇

Appreciate it, but I am sadly still just in the planning and researching stage. I will start writing it in January and will be finished in June. If I can publish it without my name, then I will do so here on Lemmy 👍

Not done with my thesis yet… But, ExpressVPN is owned by Kape Technologies, who also own PIA and Cyberghost. To me that’s already sketchy as I wouldn’t trust a company that owns three of the same services, feels like they are all the same but layered with different UIs, although I cannot prove that.

Furthermore, Kape Technologies used to be Crossrider, a company that were connected to malware distribution.

Although not a peer reviewed source, I hope to dive deeper into this:

I am currently writing my master thesis on this topic. The three beat choices out there are, Mullvad, ProtonVPN, IVPN. Plus Windscribe for an honorable mention (they have by far the funniest marketing team).
