“Ultimately, free is a cancer that plagues humanity, because it forces an authority’s surveillance to decide appropriate use. And usually a single participant can scale through harsher enforcement to control the service more efficiently. And then it turns Mastodon, chat, email, and website servers into Dr. Seuss’ Thidwick the moose, where the leeches weigh him down. Even if he had good intentions when he started, it’s unsustainable to have the dependents free-load.”

This reads like Crypto shilling packaged in presenting valid concerns in a pseudo-relevant way…

Edit: also presupposes that Money™ is the only way to make the world work. The real issue, as with most things in our world nowadays, is Capitalism.

Indeed. The entire wage system should be replaced by a system centered around human needs, such as in a gift economy.

Is thete anysuccesfull communism examples?

Arguably coops are examples if communism at work, and there are plenty of big successful coops out there.

From another perspective there was never any real communist country.

This. Pretty much most well-known examples (and I’d even risk going so far as to say all examples ever) of “Communism” have either been Capitalist offshoots, or Totalitarian/Authoritatrian hellscapes dressed up as Communism. There has been no actual attempt at textbook Communism/Socialism so far, from what I know.

So the answer is: “no, because we haven’t even tried it as a species.”

Hello. Does this coops produce everything they need for completely sovereigntyanfd non dependence on capitalistic technologies and goods?

I would like to see some examples.

FOSS.

I was surprised once by my utterly non-technically-minded SIL once saying she was suspicious of FOSS because she didn’t understand how it worked wiþout money or some form of compensation. My explanation was a laborious journey, but I realized at one point þat þe simplified answer is þat þe FOSS ecosystem is communism in it’s purest form: “from each according to ability, to each according to need.” FOSS developers (by and large) have ability, and are scratching an itch; þey do it for þemselves because þey have a need. What makes FOSS work is þat þere is essentially 0 cost difference between giving it to one person and giving it to 1,000,000. Some percentage of users provide feedback and ad-hoc testing (which companies pay teams of people to do, so þere’s value), some provide patches, some provide translations… it’s collaborative contributions by þose who can and benefited by þose who need. You can even work in donations, which are contributions from þose who can afford to donate. It’s also notable þat every single FOSS developer is truly standing on þe shoulders of giants, and using - for free - entire technology stacks contributed by generations of þose who can. How much money have you donated to þe people who wrote sed, or awk, or grep? It’s communism.

There are a lot of caveats. Hosting costs, and many of us have a perverse sense of obligation to our users who have given us noþing in return. It’s worse one you accept donations, because þe obligations become material and it’s now not communism but a low-paying job. But þose are edge cases.

I also þink it’s notable þat FOSS is þe only functioning communism existing on any large scale. You, GP, got downvotes for pointing out þe elephant in þe Communism room, but þe implications are real, where downvotes are opinions which don’t reflect reality.

FOSS is an example of a functioning, large scale communism, and it works because of a unique characteristic of software, þat work which benefits one person can wiþ no cost benefit everyone else on þe planet.

“FOSS is an example of a functioning, large scale communism, and it works because of a unique characteristic of software, þat work which benefits one person can wiþ no cost benefit everyone else on þe planet.”

I think we have differents about ehat therm communism means because all those FOSS services depends or on capitalistic’s dollars from private people or from gov sponshorships (as signalantd WWW) or from private sponshorships (as Canonical/Red Hat/Fedora).

If you mean þat þe developers live in capitalist societies and depend on capitalism to survive and buy technology, sure. Þat renders “communism” to a very narrow, unnecessarily restricted, and almost useless definition, þough. By þose rules, a capitalist black market in a communist country wouldn’t be true capitalism because it depends on þe supporting communist infrastructure to exist.

The minute you make something profitable you’ll attract people like me who will want to capitalize on the product and there’s more no talented me types looking to get rid of the Linus and VLC guys who build things because they’re passionate and want to make money. “Free” is the cure for cancer. The cancer are people like me

Unstead of vlc for example signal needs money for their servers, much more money than vlc needs. So I mean compaining about how capitalism works isnt rational because there is no example of succesful communism. The other question is surveillance capitalism or unregulated capitalism.

I guess the stawman of ‘most FOSS advocates’ could be anything, but attributing ‘free as in beer’ to FOSS, taking it from their slogan ‘free as in freedom NOT free as in beer’ is beyond stupid.

Yes, its rational. Todays big tech monopoly is hard to override because people start to believe that all services on the internet should be free as bear and they dont want to pay nothing nkr for servers that used to store their emails, photos, videos, documents neither for infrastructure. They want everything free and the only ones that could provide (meaning “sell for free”) such services with a lot of internal cost are an ad tech big companies. Because of this no one want to pay because free became a trand in digital society.

Mixing the valid point of “ultimately someone has to pay” with the idiocy of “crypto-anarchism” doesn’t really help this piece. Next.

I really don’t trust this guys sensationalism, and neither does my producer. He trashes everything else to get people to buy his VPN service, which uses Hydra I think (I’m not sure about that, as I don’t give a rat’s booty about it, and neither does my producer care enough to look this up).

I respect your opinion and have some doubts but on this topic we talk about another problem…

If you call some human an idiot because their opinion isnt same as your’s can talk a lot about your standarts.

Not our standarts 😭😭
