That pal in the thumbnail looks like someone on the Palworld team took a fan edit of an Egyptian themed lucario and specifically designed that pal to look just like it.
I read in steam reviews that the Dev is actually suspected to use genAi on Pokémon images to create their pal designs
Would not surprise me either way.
I would say almost all of them fall under the ‘legally distinct but totally is’ category.
The server I set up for my friends is named “Portable Creatures: Exhalation of the Wilderness” for a reason.
