I would like to remind people that Brave browser (and by extension their search engine) is not privacy-centric whatsoever.\n\nBrave was already [ousted as spyware in the past](https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/brave) and the company has made many decisions that are questionable at best. For example, [Brave made a cryptocurrency](https://techcrunch.com/2017/06/01/brave-ico-35-million-30-seconds-brendan-eich/) which they then added to a [rewards program](https://brave.com/brave-rewards/) that is built into the browser to encourage you to enable ads that are controlled by Brave. \n\nEdit: Please be aware that the spyware article on Brave (and the rest of the browsers on the site) is outdated and may not reflect the browser as it is today. \n\nAfter creating this cryptocurrency and rewards program, they started [inserting affiliate codes](https://davidgerard.co.uk/blockchain/2020/06/06/the-brave-web-browser-is-hijacking-links-and-inserting-affiliate-codes/) into URL's. Prior to this they had [faked fundraising for popular social media creators](https://davidgerard.co.uk/blockchain/2019/01/13/brave-web-browser-no-longer-claims-to-fundraise-on-behalf-of-others-so-thats-nice/).\n\nDo these decisions seem like ones a company that cares about their users (and by extension their privacy) would make? I'd say the answer is a very clear no.\n\nOne last thing, [Brave illegally promoted an eToro affiliate program making a fortune from its users who will likely lose their money](https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/8793).\n\nEdit: To the people commenting saying how Brave has a good out-of-the-box experience compared to other browsers, yes, it does. However, this is **not** a warning for your average person, this is a warning for people who actively care about their privacy and don't mind configuring their browser to maximize said privacy.","creator_id":172899,"community_id":5,"removed":false,"locked":false,"published":"2023-10-09T17:54:36.431605","updated":"2023-10-10T20:26:53.672216","deleted":false,"nsfw":false,"embed_title":null,"embed_description":null,"embed_video_url":null,"thumbnail_url":null,"ap_id":"https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/5933715","local":false,"language_id":37,"featured_community":false,"featured_local":false},"community":{"id":5,"name":"privacy","title":"Privacy","description":"# A place to discuss privacy and freedom in the digital world.\n\nPrivacy has become a very important issue in modern society, with companies and governments constantly abusing their power, more and more people are waking up to the importance of digital privacy. \n\nIn this community everyone is welcome to post links and discuss topics related to privacy.\n\n### Some Rules\n\n - Posting a link to a website containing tracking isn't great, if contents of the website are behind a paywall maybe copy them into the post\n - Don't promote proprietary software\n - Try to keep things on topic\n - If you have a question, please try searching for previous discussions, maybe it has already been answered\n - Reposts are fine, but should have at least a couple of weeks in between so that the post can reach a new audience\n - Be nice :)\n\n### Related communities\n\n- [Lemmy.ml libre_culture](https://lemmy.ml/c/libre_culture)\n- [Lemmy.ml privatelife](https://lemmy.ml/c/privatelife)\n- [Lemmy.ml DeGoogle](https://lemmy.ml/c/degoogle)\n- [Lemmy.ca privacy](https://lemmy.ca/c/privacy)\n\nmuch thanks to @gary_host_laptop for the logo design :)","removed":false,"published":"2019-11-15T23:50:53.712299","updated":"2024-11-22T21:30:19.947538","deleted":false,"nsfw":false,"actor_id":"https://lemmy.ml/c/privacy","local":false,"icon":"https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/h1ChnLuBHr.png","banner":"https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/DBjcqOW9ds.png","hidden":false,"posting_restricted_to_mods":false,"instance_id":3},"counts":{"id":30282,"comment_id":35917,"score":3,"upvotes":3,"downvotes":0,"published":"2023-10-09T22:20:51.225588","child_count":0},"creator_banned_from_community":false,"subscribed":"NotSubscribed","saved":false,"creator_blocked":false,"my_vote":null}],"posts":[],"moderates":[]}]}
How would things break from including it yourself? Just download the file from the links in your post and include them on your webserver it shouldn’t require any code changes beyond that. You also never know if they would take down an old version or if some outage will occur so I’d personally rather host them instead of relying on additional servers to work.
PWA - Portable Web App, Apple was going to make this the primary way to run apps but then decided an app store and private stuff was more profit and their support for it tends to be on the suckier side, but has gotten better over the years. You install a PWA in your browser by either “Install” or “Add to home screen” or something like that depending on browser and device being used.
Valve also worries about relying on Microsoft. They want people to transition to Linux since it’s open and no corporation can go “all games have to go through my store for 30% commission!” The proton fixes that these clients make Valve can also probably utilize to also make and I’m sure the devs for these also contribute to proton so it’s a win for everyone.
Yeah I see nothing that using a local version that would cause that… Hmm next I would try mixing CDN ref and local ref for js/CSS try to pinpoint what one is making it buggy.
