Have you tried cloning and ssd or swapping it into another device to see if the same effect happens? That could tell you if it’s a software or hardware issue. If you have researched and used those fairly extensive battery programs then I’m guessing there’s some sort of hardware issue. I’d swap or clone the ssd. And check on another laptop.

Sounds like a bad battery or something is phantom draining it. That’s unusual unless there is a software issue. I’d run full system logs to check what the load on the battery is before it dies while at rest, you can also try power-top, and TLP.

Lenovo makes some decent laptops. Asus. MSI. There are quite a few. Dells are decent. I think it’s less hardware dependant and more software if you’re PC or laptops are having suspend issues. Mint works good for instance but lately NIX has been having suspend issues for me.

I’ve thought a lot about this. By making the choices you do you already single handedly categorized yourself. We are under so much tech behind the scenes that any move you make puts you into an analytical box, spot how you do things here or there and you have a pattern of trade craft. With trade craft you can educatedly infer the rest with probability. Exactly how they caught Osama.

Edit: Even spoofing your moves in everyway your still going to be noticed. Hiding has long been gone. Cloaking is where we are somewhere between cloaking and multiple identities.

Told my older parents I use a custom ROM with a profile for work and a profile for personal and they asked me what I’m hiding, and why I’m so paranoid. I said… it’s not paranoia, it’s organization. Color coding profiles allows my mind to switch gears from work to personal life like mental compartments. I am a boring person. I have nothing to be paranoid about. They didn’t believe me. Oh well…

Edit: part of me thinks the whole mental state switching from work profile to personal is an ADHD aspect as well. Especially the color coding helps wonders.

Damn this take needs more love. You will get shouted down And downvoted to the lowest depths if you speak against anything that isn’t graphene. I like the project, it has merit. It’s far far from perfect in so many ways. I don’t believe it’s the white knight in shining armour we like to think it is. Good yes. Saving grace. Not by a long shot. It’s got many fundamental flaws.

Be conscious of your needs, not obsessive. I think a lot of people are obsessive and I get it totally. But FOMO is powerful. Don’t overwork your mind trying to be perfect that you never make moves. Life isn’t static. If your uneducated enough to truly need the utmost best tech stacks with no real knowledge on how to implement and deploy. You likely don’t need to be doing the shit your thinking of, or currently doing.

I happen to disagree here. I’ve used Gos for years it lacks so many fundamental features and has a lot of issues. The entire project has really silod itself into some issues they aren’t addressing. Let me explain by pulling from some of my posts.

Edit: You can’t see everything you’ve ever posted only a brief history. Basically some issues with Gos are lack of full backups/device to device, which in so many ways is a deal breaker… Seedvault works I’ve hopped from model to model phones for years the problems you run into are plentiful and haven’t been addressed in years, each profile must be backed up individually not on the same ssd either, seperate drives as the restoration isn’t possible without seperate drives due to backup limitations. The easiest I have found it to backup like usual with a flash drive for each profile which is super cumbersome to keep up with at the frequency one really should.

I’ve restored and tried everything including dev talks, and their forums, they plan to try to fix some issues but it’s been 3 years so far since we talked in depth and nothing yet, lack of granular networking controls for almost all reasons possible this is an issue most people think connect to a VPN and your solid. A VPN is a single tool in the chain of tools, compatibility and software issues are numerous. Anyone who has used Gos and really daily drove all the functionality aside from flashing a single device for years knows the pains I am talking about the power users.

The project has silo’d itself into security, when that is just one aspect of any system. It’s really not the white knight everyone thinks it is. Yes it has merit, yes it’s well done so far, but to truly utilize in all your cases you mention and average person scenarios for daily life given what people try to use it for and or avoid from say confiscation, seizure, etc etc.

There’s so many issues aside from just losing your device, your life’s data is tied into an OS that well is secure mostly, but you’ll never see your data back again once it’s stolen or lost or taken.

I can’t remember some of the things I have wrote down in my comment history and it’s late in my time zone to rack my memory that deep. But there’s a lot of reasons most people don’t know enough about, or understand why Gos is not the end all be all OS. It’s good and has great features for security but lacks most fundamental features of a modern x86 based system. Mobile attack surface is bigger and harder to control, mobile has limitation issues fundamentally on all sides. So does x86 or ARM etc. Understand your threat model and work accordingly. If you want to continue this I will update the post as I remember Gos limitations and problems.

Yeah I just seen that. GPS is literally the backbone of phones. Wild. Software is the only way to spoof and or disable the feature. Custom ROMs are the only method essentially to gain the control you need. G-OS, lineage, etc etc which means the device also runs leaner and battery lasts days. It’d really the best solution far as I can tell.

Yeah that’s the thing. Hotspots are not any different require the same sim cards except if you choose satellite Starlink. That’s it. So the reasoning behind going the route i have is to completely cut out the mobile aspect and every part within except the 5g sim card since modern infrastructure doesn’t allow it basically.

All comms, apps, services, everything moved to a Linux x86 device and simply cable tether for internet. It’s still identity tied due to SIM (same with hotspots due to sim so a cell is lighter and better equipped to run lean even flashing custom ROMs add to control factor) but again it’s realistically as close and hassle free as one can get for daily use as a total phone replacement for a normal person. The entire phone is disabled aside from data and that’s behind VPN.

Anyone have suggestions on better paths or methods?

Sounds pretty good actually. I repair electronics, I wonder about just removing the GPS chip from the phone?

Either way with internet your going to be tracked the point is to minimize as much ss possible. Triangulation will always be an issue.

I’m not some giant target. Just a daily privacy conscious user like anyone, who wants to support FLOSS projects. I think in my use case I found the least hassle solution. I have no real use for insane amounts of solutions like a journalist or whistler. Just a normal person doing the best they can.

I have decided this approach is such a pain and hassle that I have had to change forms. Mostly due to modern societies infrastructure making it truly impossible.

I moved all phone related things, programs, apps, anything but dumb flip phone calling and texting to a x86 based tablet. (Even a wwan or 5g sim capable device doesn’t have a cellular modem so the easiest route is this)

Hotpot or cable tethering from sim card 5g/4Glte/volte from a smart phone, with your carrier sim of choice, best to pick a device matching their cellular band support in your part of the world. Routing calls /texts to the desktop Linux device of your choice laptop/tablet, 2in1, device of your choosing basically. Using the phone for nothing except internet period…, perhaps a backup device if ever needed worst case if your main goes down or breaks.

Secure and private as one could get, and totally power userable due to linux desktop capabilities and granular controls of literally everything, while still having the best reliable internet coverage, with traditional calling and texting for 2fa and other big corpo stuff. Yes the sim is tied to your real identity, but the actual day to day is much more private and secure than mobile, seperate device, vpn, LUKS drive, veracrypt, all desktop x86 (distro of your choice) Linux abilities. Close as one could get without living under a rock daily. Backups full and snapshots offsite sent to NAS or true cloned drives.

What do you think?

Then you harden the hardware further (so many ways to list again device dependant), and software as well (depends on your OS and needs/wants). (Qubes is too beefy to run all day as a phone replacement regardless of hardware. Batteries are the weak link) That being said pick any distro you feel good about and go.

This form is the most stable method, while being realistic to the goal. I have my own personal preferences for which devices, distros, settings, etc. That I can use daily.

Is Lynis (audit tool) worth using in 2025?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/31440973 > The tool Lynis is an auditing tool used to audit Unix systems. Is it still relevant? Worth using? > > It used to be fairly widely used years ago. Is it still worth its salt or are there other better options? Do you guys think it's needed at all with common sense now days.

Do you actually audit open source projects you download?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/30846701 > The question is simple. I wanted to get a general consensus on if people actually audit the code that they use from FOSS or open source software or apps. > > Do you blindly trust the FOSS community? I am trying to get a rough idea here. Sometimes audit the code? Only on mission critical apps? Not at all? > > Let's hear it!

How would anyone get the long string though? Realistically speaking. It would be difficult and unlikely.

Who knows how to steal you mull account with out you knowing? This seems over blown atleast from that perspective. I’m sure it’s possible but unless you are incredibly slopping opsec I doubt it’s even on the list of problems. Given all other things you could be doing.

Obsidian is closed source the Dev actively really listens to the user base and its very feature rich as in nothing really compares. Joplin second and then after that you looking at more basic apps.

They can all be private and encrypted in transit and at rest. It’s mostly about what features you want and then once you see what you can integrate you might want some quality of life features you didn’t even know you could want.

Is Signal safe and still private on an IPhone?
Basically just the title, delete this if it's not the right community. I hate iphones and apple stuff for obvious reasons. But I am forced to use it to some degree. I just want to get a community consensus on any problems with signal being shared, seen, monitored, or sent to apple servers or icloud while being used on an iphone.

Their just mad they can’t track you as much. Switch VPN locations it takes sometimes many servers. Fuck them. Network issue.

Unfortunately it seems to be in a neighborhood that is exactly the opposite of this. Should narrow down the scope of answers.

Build a secret sex room has to be the underated aspect of your whole reply 👌😂. What if said people are pretty vanilla?

Permissions stop what the app can and cannot access in your phone, and storage access allows what the Garmin app can and cannot access in storage of data. Keeps your app more private with the added benefit of perhaps running leaner on your device.

Just use the regular Garmin account and Bluetooth to your phone every 2 weeks to sync for health data use storage scopes and permissions to stop unwanted data collection, use privacy settings in the app, fake account. Be done. Never use support they will dox you.

Mint seems to be where alot of journeys start and stay for good reason. It’s polished, simple, ease of use is phenomenal, and apps you can understand the names and uses.

These people aren’t your friends. Their business is to be in yours. They can fuck off.

All you have to do is change severs sometimes a few and refresh. Then it can flag your browser. It’s a pain because people get severs blacklisted that and Modern sites like Google and YouTube and others use AI to detect unusual traffic patterns.

Sucks but once you find a good server remember the number and use it until it’s burned takes some time months even then move on again. They are trying really hard to dox all users and make it hard for privacy minded folk.

Its simple as hell, out of the way. Its a no fuss email that seems to have all the features you’d want. It just works. Carbon neutral and all the good stuff we all like to boot.

Follow up in a week. I would like to see how this works for you!

No real data to backup this claim other than complaints about their addons which can be disabled, and their CEO doesn’t have the best morals and principles. Like we all believe the exact same things everyday all day.

Multiple highly reputable non profits and other sources show the browser itself performs as one of the best when it comes to privacy. Leave the negativity against Nestle.

I wonder too. It has to be them pushing the update through the app itself. I got another update notif. Last night. I checked both stores and no updates there. This must be it! Just seemed super odd at first.

I’ve heard of Molly and read the repo. But I’m unsure how it would be more official and secure than the actual official app.

Phew. OK. Thanks. I’d rather post and ask then be ignorant. Still unsettling.

This sounds like the answer. The app updates from guardian repo. I will change the update path. Say the app had well something malicious injected would a new update flush the old app and in with the brand new?

I had this happen. I clicked the notification many times nothing happened. Then eventually it did. It was odd. I just wanted to make sure everything was still intact.

It was 10 days ago for the last update, then the first one was a few days prior to that. Those two were the only two ever to have that happen.

Anyone had their signal app want to auto update from itself rather than an app store?
My signal app a week ago had 2 seperate, a few days apart, app updates from the app itself. Asking to check install from unknown sources to be checked inside the settings. Giving prompts from the notification drop down. Such as app update available. Click it, asked for setting to be checked, I checked it, it said it updated, all seems well and fine. But doing this outside of both stores which usually update the app from say F droid or Aurora. I've never seen this happen ever. It wasn't a user confirmation. It was a total app update. Seems odd that the signal app itself asked to update itself from a notification from the drop down menu. How can I make sure it has not been compromised? Anyone else experienced something of the sort? Android phone. Pixel. Gos.

House building ideas and how to implement for increased Privacy/Security.
Basically what the title says. Someone I know is building a house and they want all sorts of security and privacy added benefits one could have with no hold backs. This post basically serves as a place for everyone to come contribute ideas, hardware, and software, even self hosting is possible to increase the safety, security, and privacy of the home. So feel free to contribute thoughts and ideas but please include how to implement your concept if you can! Plug and play is preferred but a little reasonable amount of self hosting could be done, with a preference on mechanical hardware where possible but not a hard set requirement. While money isn't an major issue within reason, be realistic and preferably eco friendly. Thanks everyone ahead of time!

Top 3 best SMS replacement apps?
The stock Graphene SMS app sucks, it lacks basic features and customization that standard SMS apps have. I see no real need to keep it for security and privacy reasons unless someone can share legitimate information about the application for a need to keep it that is note worthy I am all ears to be educated. I'd like to explore other privacy focused SMS alternative apps. Not services. Just the app. Thanks! I hope this helps others too. I can't be the only one! I chose top 3 because I would rather not try 50 apps. Just the cream of the crop. Edit: I tried several. Fossify seems to be the best overall, I encourage others interested to try it on F-Droid. Thanks everyone!

How to use AI to analyze data and compile results, and query information into a list of options?
I have loads of files and paperwork that can be scanned into files. I would like to have AI scan all the data, compile results and recommend options. For instance. A large list of 176 food items ranked based on ones immune system response to each food item compiled into a diet plan. I can strip the identifying information for privacy reasons. I just want to know how to have AI do more advanced tasks. While also respecting privacy. These concepts seems reasonably possible. However Chat, and other LLM do not scan files as they cannot be uploaded or scanned and input. Self hosting possible but not necessary for this as I can strip personal info before uploading or inputting.

2 in 1 vs Central PC vs ? Phone replacement. Easiest to use do it all device.
Phones are kind of a mess and it seems PCs are far more secure/anon vs even graphene on a pixel. Drives aren't very easily backed up or even cloned. Software is limited on mobile or needing flashed or rooted. There's a lot to a phone that could be easily solved by a tablet/2 in 1 or Micro PC with SIM capability for phone replacement if size could be slightly larger. Working or doing much if anything even on a 6.7in screen is not that good Samsung Dex was awesome but not quite the same. So I'm willing to go larger. It would be nice to go from phone usage to gaming power. But be able to add multiple internal SSDs slots as USBs are just slower and finnicky fiddly. But it seems PCs are leaps and bounds more capable. And SIM capable 2 in 1s are the middle ground. Which would be a better daily driver for anon and security? Convenience when on the go without sacrificing processing power as least as possible. What about a central PC setup that you carry everywhere? Having access to running VMs, servers, all on the go. Not a laptop but similar to an micro ITX or Intel NUC. AR mirroring PC glasses would be what I really want. The hardest part is a convenient mouse keyboard setup for times like laying in bed at night. There's so many devices things get cumbersome to do and process all the time chargers, peripherals, cables, OS types. So I was wondering what are some other peoples perspectives on this type of thinking and solutions. Its actually seeming like a device to cast or transition screen size is most convenient. Say from AR, to TV, to monitor, or phone sized easily without always cabling in to change.

Immutable Gaming Distro That Just Works.
I currently use Mint, as do several family members and friends. Its been nothing short of impeccable. I was occasionally tweaking things until now sometimes the game crashes, PC freezes requiring hard reset. Everything used to work pretty flawless out the box. Should I reinstall my mint or look at PopOS, Bazzite, Nobara, Etc? I'm at the point in my life. Where we all need something to just turn on and play. I want some shit that just works. Or reinstall mint but how without losing all my files and settings? and keep it moving as usual as it used to be flawless. Tweaking is fun until you tweaked so much shit breaks lol. I'm over tweaking. Just wanna game. I keep seeing immutable is good so that's why I ask. Thanks!! 5600x 6700xt Its an all AMD build over here :) Edit: You guys convinced me I'm booting it up now with KDE! I also plan to try PopOs. I'm excited. Thanks everyone!

How to privatize Apples Siri assistant?
I am looking for any methods to add privacy to Siri. I do not use apple products but it appears their voice assistant is the most privacy friendly option of the mainstream brands. How can I privatize/anonymize the smallest apple device with siri for daily use. Such as an iPod or iPhone jailbroke or not, or homepod device. I do not have the time to do a lengthy setup. I need plug and go for the most part as I am overworked already. I am using this for voice reminders, to do lists, the basic stuff, asking questions. Thanks. Edit: Besides locking it in a sound proof danger box, using a voice changer as input, hard wiring on its own little danger spot on the network, fake account, pi hole, and VPN. Any realistic ideas?

Private Voice Assistants on Mobile/Advice how to Privatize mainstream AI.
I am looking for a voice assistant that is as private as could be its a NEED not a want. I am aware of Mycroft who has discontinued service. I am aware of Rhasspy but it seems like a lot to setup and maintain. I'm more looking for how to privatize something mainstream on mobile to always have it with me, not a standalone at home device. I'm talking Alexa, Siri, Google assistant, ect. For to do lists, reminders, looking up questions on the web. The usual use cases. In what ways can one make their assistant a little more privacy friendly without not using one? Which assistant is best? Thanks. Edit: I've considered setting one behind VPN, Behind something like Pihole to block Calling Home from said app or device.

Auto toggle capability based on rules
I am looking for an auto toggle feature for the swipe down menu. Sometimes I forget to turn off Bluetooth, location, or other toggles on the drop down menu. Is there such a way to have Bluetooth shutoff after 15 mins of inactivity? Or say Mic, camera toggle off after X time of no use, location toggle, etc. Pixel 6 Pro.

Private WiFi camera for out of town viewing. Live view only. No storage.
Is there a WiFi camera with an app for viewing when away from home, that has decent privacy? Plug and play would be nice. Limited time to do major setup as in 2 hours tops. Cost is fine nothing into 4 digits. Recording not neccesary. No storage is needed. Simple live viewing is all.

Does this exist?? Messaging platform with a panic button from any member.
Basically I am looking for a messaging platform like signal or? but with anonymous signup, perfect forward secrecy, capable of video chat, sending photos the usual uses in today's life. But with a panic button. So that any party member could use said button to wipe all other members devices of any data instantly inside the messaging app. So if one member gets compromised, or lost their device, stolen device ect, any other member could wipe all chats, call log, and any other data strictly inside the messaging client instantly for everyone involved. Disolving the group like it never existed rendering the data unrecoverable. Amazons Wickr used to have most of these features but it is being discontinued December 2023 and who trusts amazon with their data. Does something like this exist? Sorry if I'm not explaining it well I'll do my best to clarify and update this post. I am not trying to delete the whole device. Just the data inside the messaging app. If that does not exist. What about a separate app that could delete the entire messaging platform from the device when triggered. Assume all necessary requirements are met and this is for daily use. Between a group of trusted parties. Updated wording to clarify the objective as replies where getting misunderstood.
