SiYuan (GPL) is probably the most advanced. You can get it off github. I haven’t found anything that compares in terms of notes based features. Appflowy and Affine also are open source and have good note taking capabilities.

This paragraph is why you won’t convince friends and family to use Matrix. It’s still too technical for non-technical people.

Telegram is more popular than WhatsApp in several global south countries. I use it with friends around the world, it has better functionality than WhatsApp. I’m not a fan of Meta so as far as “it just works” messaging apps go, Telegram is probably the best alternative to WhatsApp.

I’m more interested in Affine.pro and AppFlowy that serve the same use case. Both will offer encryption, both FOSS.

There’s also SiYuan (E2EE) which is a FOSS version of Obsidian but it doesn’t ha e the database table feature that AppFlowy and Affine are developing.

Anytype has been hyped for at least 4 years now and I keep waiting for something useable, I think they’re wasting FOSS community energy.

There’s also Piwigo which can be self-hosted or cloud hosted.

Just to add some nuance;

Companies do delete data on individuals when they have no more economic value to them unless they’re required by regulation to retain that data. Yes it’s true the world is storing terabytes more of data per day, but my company holds on to customer records for 5 years, if they don’t do business with us in this 5 years we will physically delete that data everywhere. There’s many use cases like this where old data isn’t stored because it doesn’t make economic sense to. Maybe when there’s a next gen parquet file that can store a decades worth of records in the size of a few KB, but at a certain point data does rot.

Luckycloud is working on integrating FolderSync into their mobile app so you’ll be able to do two-way photo and file sync (ie. Delete from your computer deletes it on the phone if you want.)
