Have you actually verified whether you can turn this connectivity off? I know on other new cars it’s embedded in the electronics with no on/off button.

I am familiar with that and don’t believe your take is accurate. When asking this question, it’s followed with a description of the thing you spy.

“I spy… do you?” is the text of the ad and the text following that doesn’t make it make any more sense either, “Game more than you thought you could.”

Why would you expect to get treated any differently by complete strangers online if you do absolutely nothing to differentiate yourself from all the bots spamming the place? What you’re suggesting is that they stop moderating these communities simply because “you shouldn’t make assumptions.”

Why would you run, for example, a programming based YouTube channel, but not want to use that same account when interacting with the community on topics of programming? You have a right to anonymity, but people also have the right to block you if you only use that account to spam links in different communities with no other engagement because there’s nothing to differentiate you from all the bots doing the same thing for different reasons.

I’ve had this exact scenario happen with my Amazon account. One the one hand its annoying, but on the other I don’t want them to make it easier for someone in another country to order stuff using my account and credit card.

Wonder how that went down with OP never even having posted or commented on their home instance.

I don’t really care if someone shares their own content as a participating member of the community, but these people are dwarfed by those who just spam their links to every community on Lemmy that bares even the slightest amount of relevance.

Yeah I don’t see that as a solution, more as a stop gap for the time being just like Vanced and any other tool that stands/stood between Google and more money.

Yes for sure with Google or Alexa and I think HA is working on their own voice stuff, but haven’t looked into it too deeply as I haven’t really ever utilized voice commands apart from tinkering with them briefly. A spare Pi works great but you can also use other stuff like a cheap Dell Optiplex micro or and old laptop. If you use the Pi, I’d recommend installing a small SSD with it and running it off that versus an SD card. The card won’t last long with all the read/writes.

Go with Home Assistant and never use some proprietary hub again.

Thanks for the breakdown! I’ve definitely got some research to do.

Are you running the cameras by themselves or do you also use the Amcrest NVR? I bought a PoE kit with the NVR but find it very clunky to use and have yet to figure out how to transfer video clips off of it (USB flashdrive only?). I’ve been interested in Frigate and the like but have yet to really dig into it. I’m also running a server with Plex and HA with lots of storage which would work for storage provided I buy a PoE switch.

They were bought by an Israeli company that makes malware or adware.

At least they handled it well with plenty of notice and hassle-free refunds for anyone who requests them. I was sad to go but still support the company.

Yes, Musk recently intervened personally to unban a guy who posted CSAM that remained up for a week and got millions ofn vews . That must be the type of ‘free speech’ OP is referring to.

What does consent consist of? Most other TOS state that using the product means you consent to whatever is included in the TOS.

Which seems to imply that by agreeing to their TOS, you are giving consent for them to use this.

Also this. Surprising so many on the right support people like this when he’s the literal personification of all their adrenochrome/deep state conspiracy nonsense.

Even with that I think it’s debatable. They were employed by the FBI at the time of usage so it isn’t totally inaccurate to say it was the FBI doing it and we don’t know what knowledge the FBI guys had of the company’s methods.

You can argue its misleading but I disagree. Outsourcing bad behavior to a third party doesn’t remove culpability on your part. This is all to common these days and allows both parties to point fingers at each other while nobody faces any responsibility for breaking the law, violating people’s rights, and/or unethical behavior.

The FBI just using assumptions and impressions on methodologies used by the company they contracted with is no excuse when they could have asked how the work was going to be performed. Incompetence is no excuse either.
