My DPO basically told me that since reddit told me (I contacted reddit first as per the GDPR) that I can delete my comments myself I should go ahead and do that, and that my case was closed. Even after telling her that there were still 2 comments visible only when my profile is viewed “signed out”, and I provided a screenshot of a regular browser window where I am signed in and an incognito window where I am not, her reply was that once I delete my account they will not be linked to me in any way so they do not violate the GDPR…
Ive been engaged in discussion with my country’s data protection officer since the summer, and the reply I got was that I should delete comments myself. There are 2 comments that appear on my profile only if viewed while I am signed out, and when I raised the concerns with her I basically got the reply that “there is no personal information contained within and once you delete your account there is no username attached to them so you cant be linked with them”. Is she right, and how do I handle this situation?
I dont think so (correct me if im wrong). An alternative app might have access to the content etc and get around this paywall somehow.
Anyways, you still have the option to not pay and keep using IG as before. Nothing changes.
As fir my issue with this, im in the privacy community…need i say more? XD
I dont have many photos, but thats not the issue. Its that all my friends are on it, and until I leave after my bachelors and need to have contact with them often im stuck with it. After i leave to a different country once i get my degree itll be easier, but for the next year or so im stuck with instagram because i dknt want to lose contact with them. As most people, they would never leave the mainstream thing behind, so no chance of converting them as well
Thanks for the GDPR info (grabs popcorn to watch as well).
As for facebook, I only use it because of messenger for work, which I will delete as soon as im done with my BSc in about a year (I work at my uni). I dont have the app but rather a PWA on my phone, not that theres much difference.
However, Im interested in instagram because of good friends that use it
In the EU you don’t need to follow their process. Any GDPR request can be made to them through any channel and they must comply. If they don’t, then the next step is to file a complaint with your local data protection office, or the data protection office of the European country where the offending company is represented.
Honestly i think as citizens we should start setting up guillotines outside parliaments. That should remind them that they may feel invulnerable but we can always get them.
Bonus: to really scare them, set up a little cooker thing with a table next to it. The phrase “eat the rich” comes to mind, though in this context it would be more like eat the powerful
