I’m trying to selfhost some Lemmy communities just for fun :)

Buddhist, researcher, FOSS, Linux, selfhosting enthusiast, plantbased, anarchism and MLM interested.

Trying to be nice. I really dislike the Reddit style aggressive comments. If you are rude I will block and ban you.

This is an okay write up but okay? Who uses this anymore? Who used it at all?

This is a very long comment when they definitely already know users addresses, lol

Fully agree with you, ethos is much better than reality. What do you use instead then?

I understand your point. I suspect the main advantage the post isn’t making clear is that PeerTube doesn’t have the same ensnaring algorithm that YouTube does, so it doesn’t keep you endlessly watching the next video or at least suggesting another video to you.

I honestly find this a negative which is spread around carelessly as a positive. On Peertube I see zero content except linux. On Mastodon I can only either find that one star trek dude, linux and foss dudes, or libs complaining about politics. Lemmy is easier to find stuff but has very little content.

I’ve let go of all other google and social media formats but youtube has actually good content and honestly a good algorithm. I search for something I want or watch something from my youtube rss feed then it recommends what I want. I have ads and tracking blocked. I only get the content I want.

I can’t say the same for most of the fediverse honestly.

I think that’s kind of an advantage of a lot of fediverse alternatives is they’re comparatively “boring” in that they force you to be more intentional.

That’s honestly just showed me how pointless it all is…

the post is too much for me to read right now.

Huh?

Yeah I liked that too then they suddenly say they replaced it with Peertube… which doesn’t make anything sense to me.

Replacing YouTube with reading is a great idea but replacing YouTube with peertube still makes no sense. No tracking for .0000000001% of the content.

It makes their goals in this post unclear to me. Is it to degoogle or to devideo.

So if you put your RSS feed application behind a vpn it would be more private?

Haha! How did you simpsonify a photo of yourself?? That’s so cool!

Thanks! I only knew them as yelling, cursing, and attacking others on mastodon person

Every interaction I’ve had with that person is insane. Who even are they?

Sorry, idk why you got downvoted. I turned those off for me and my instance. Thanks for sharing!

Either in a locked FOSS program like Trilium or a physical notebook. I censor myself more in the physical notebook but also I write a ton of random thoughts in it so the chances of them reading a political thought surrounded by 100s of daily to dos and random server thoughts is low.

But how would I backup everything from an iPhone? I got photos and contacts down. Idk about the rest. Maybe you’ve given me a new project.

How can you do this especially if you don’t pay for cloud storage? I have self hosted cloud

I searched and searched about this and every response of theirs I found gave the same speech about IMAP not being as safe as their apps.

Thanks!

Mailbox.org is a commonly recommended service beside Tuta and Proton. I was going to switch from Proton to Tuta to have more custom domain emails but it doesn’t allow service outside of its apps. Mailbox.org is cheaper and allows 50 custom domains :)

I quickly quit them because they don’t do IMAP for “security” reasons, ie walled garden, and their support requires you paying. After canceling my membership I literally couldn’t contact support unless I paid again.

Thanks! What’s a proton simple login? In this use case could I use my name.com domain? I think mailbox can do this!

True, hence another reason I switched to mailbox.

I guess my question is more email naming and domain.

How do you handle email for prof and private uses?
I was using protonmail for my custom domain for work and private emails but now I think mailbox has better options, providing way more custom domain emails. Wondering what the best use case is? Thinking of using my own domains instead of proton. I have this one and my name. Using name@name.com or bills@name.com is fun and easy but is it private? These companies already know my name so is using my work website domain okay? Current emails - name@name.com for prof - product@pm.me example for money - notlegal@proton.me example for legal torrenting - No idea what I will use this domain for
fedilink

My laptop only has wifi and Bluetooth with no microphone or camera. What exactly are you referring to?

It cost 10$ to get a domain. It’s certainly worth it!

This seems like way too much thought and work. I delete and report any unknown numbers unless they’re obviously from someone I know. Easy!

Their replies act like some Mozilla rep. It isn’t that clear

This website honestly is too hard. Idk what those tens of categories mean and hard to see each one

Duck search has never been good at actually finding results.
