Wine-GE was abandoned for the new UMU-launcher. Lutris will use UMU if you target the GE-Proton (latest) version. You can always use vanilla wine or wine staging too, make sure you install dxvk in the prefix though with winetricks.

Well maybe if you’d added some context we could narrow down the problem. Because on my pc, it literally is that simple.

I’d still recommend a bleeding edge distro if the friend in question has recent hardware and/or likes to play games on release. It doesn’t have to be arch though, and you can probably grab a recent kernel on Mint too if necessary.

Does it matter where it comes from though? Do you think regular folks are like: “i’m gonna play on my WINDOWS MACHINE”? They just use whatever came pre-installed.

Supposedly Windows can mess with the linux bootloader if it’s on the same drive, i never had it happen back when i still dual booted. Reinstalling the bootloader isn’t too hard though if it ever does happen.

Winetricks has a setting to toggle virtual desktop if you want; however virtual desktop is barely maintained so you probably should switch to gamescope .
