From what I can tell, it’s likely based on the Christian holiday, Christmas, which is probably a religious version of the Winter solstice. So not totally arbitrary.

That is really helpful, thank you! Any suggestions for clients? I like Capy Reader for Android, but how about desktop? Specifically Ubuntu.
