not updating only works if your so out of date that there are tons more machines with new attack vectors that have not been patched. As time goes by new sotware is not all that new in the way it functions. Its just not a good way to go. I will say to that all the work with blocking windows telemetry is more than any work dealing with linux. Especially so if you use an easy distro.

you don’t have to be very tech savy to use a password manager. I use a keypass variant for local ones and keep important ones there and bitwarden online with stuff that if it got taken over would not matter.

do you call much. tracfone its easy to pick up cards or up your minutes online. their unlimited is fine to but honestly I find the minutes more useful as I don’t even like being on the phone.

I get the feeling. My wife and I keep wondering how long we can refuse to use smartphones. I like polluting the data pool. There is a developer app to set a faux location for the phone. anything I can do to send wrong data is a bigger thing to me than not sending the data.

Honestly for me I have just been lazy about getting to anything passed low hanging fruit. A bit about not wanting to rock the boat to. Once, hopefully, im working again Im going to get a new drive and make more of a push to transition the harder part over.

So most people I know do not get rid of their old laptop when they get a new one. If this is you then put linux on the old laptop. I recommend it for anyone looking to switch because when your old machine performs better than your newer one it is pretty impressive. This way at least your browsing is a bit more private.

personally I use keepass for important things and don’t sue extension or anything that would pull from it and I use bitwarden for unimportant passwords. not that bitwarden is necessarilly unsafe but im a person who ultimately thinks its best I completely control the important things.

termights replies to you make me agree with your original statement. any harm was to things that are themselves overall harmful. Now that I look at it, it feels like between what we saw with snowden and schwartz it was 2013 when I really realized things are really really messed up.

I remember asking my company if they have official password management software in my job before my last job. They did not. I can’t believe we have all this specific software to be used at the company but they don’t put some time to identify what they want employees to use for this. Funny thing is security teams are such big deals but I think they actually don’t want to get involved in case it does not work out.
