I wouldn’t work at those companies, but I wouldn’t say the developers who work there are quite as evil as the directors at those companies. It’s true they were just doing their job, like they were just following orders, but people do need to work at the end of the day. Whether they work there for prestige, or for the pay, and sure you could argue nobody needs that pay, we have already seen people who stick their necks out at those companies get their heads chopped off. Not everyone who works there is going to be fine with (or worse, happy with) how evil the companies are, but also not everyone there is going to stick their neck out either. In summary, I don’t think it’s fair to blame the developers who work there. I once worked at a mid-sized advertising company, they hid that they were an advertising company and at that point it was too late.
Besides, not everyone has enough experience that they can quit their job at the drop of a hat, especially in this pro-business layoff-heavy economy.
Yeah but that’s not new, that has existed for years even in Merlin firmware. People were saying that this affects Merlin but I’m not seeing any indication of it yet.
Yes I know ASUS is shitty and evil, and it sucks that those features are gated behind abandoning your privacy, but I was saying that part isn’t new, and I don’t think this new stuff affects Merlin yet.
We’ll see how it all plays out, though.
The symptoms were the internal display went black after an automatic firmware update (you can’t disable firmware updates, they happen automatically) and never came on again, and then external display also went black after working only once. The device would power on, you would hear the fans running, but there was no display and no startup chime.
Mine died 9 months out of warranty, last week they told me over the phone that apparently the firmware got corrupted and they have to reprogram it, and it will cost $120 USD + tax + shipping (+ import fees of course). I haven’t heard anything else yet. I sent it off for RMA back on May 7, so it’s been a little while lol
Selfhosted DigitalOcean VPS with SOCKS 5 SSH tunnelling for masking my home IP when web browsing and OVH VPS with OpenVPN server for masking my home IP for my local seedbox server. I don’t really need commercial VPNs since I only really need basic functionality to mask my IP and I don’t really need a shared service to do that.
YMMV, of course.
I’ve always liked Google Meet better anyway. Hopefully Google don’t decide to scrap it too, because while it seems like it is going to stick around, they do really like scrapping projects…
edit: Nevermind, I forgot people aren’t allowed to have preferences. I understand Google is evil, and their web extensions is literally going to kill the Internet, but you can’t tell me that millions of people aren’t using Gmail.
WhatsApp is owned by Meta, so you should expect that they will do this soon enough if they aren’t doing it already.
