I tend to play Team Fortress 2. It’s a rather old game. The server I play on used to allow anyone to connect. Later on, it kicked me (sometimes) because it detected me originating from one of MullvadVPN’s IP addresess. They seem to have updated the blacklist list so it always seems to detect me using a VPN. I just don’t want to share my public IP with them.

Is there a clever way around this? I feel like all the residential proxies tend to be quite pricey compared to a normal VPN

I don’t use Mullvad myself, but I recently browsed privacyguides.org, which says the following:

Custom server IPs: To counter IP-blocking, you can request custom server IPs from Mullvad’s support team. Once you receive the custom IPs, you can input the text file in the “Server IP override” settings, which will override the chosen server IP addresses with ones that aren’t known to the censor.

Maybe you can ask the support team whether they can give you an IP that is not publicly known as VPN.

set up your own vpn server on a ‘low end box’ (small and cheap vps) for your own exclusive use.

Hmm… All I can think of is doing this and borrowing a neighboring towns internet. Like a blackbox xD which doesn’t sound legal.

Doing in within my own network, would not change my IP. Doing it within a family members network… Well I don’t want to share their IP either :P

Or do you mean like one of those free website hosting providers?

More like effectively a paid-for VPS which, depending on where you live, might cost about €3/mo.

Configuration is all on your end and, to be fair, you may still end up on a blocklist since that’s just a way to bypass their VPN restriction and your IP will not show up to be a residential address.

What are you talking about mate? The VPS will be a wireguard server, your device will connect to it and use the VPS’ IP address to connect to your game

Why not ask the server admin to whitelist your Steam ID? If you’re apparently a “regular” and don’t cause problems, I don’t see why they wouldn’t whitelist you.

Because they don’t allow VPNs and for some weird reason, they consider it cheating. Got banned once, but that was during a time I got in with a VPN. For some reason, my steam ID wasn’t banned. But more of me and my IP in combination. Back then, I could just switch origin IP. Now its jot really possible and quite annoying ^^;

they don’t allow VPNs

Most likely to reduce the risk of ban-evading cheaters/griefers. Plus that most people usually avoid using a VPN when playing such games, due to the risk of increased latency.

For some reason, my steam ID wasn’t banned.

All of these plugins initiate only an IP ban, so the person is able to rejoin with their “real” IP address.

But you’ve actually tried asking for your Steam ID to be whitelisted? Shame that their admins don’t know how to/don’t want to do it.

I haven’t asked because I’m quite sure they simply would ignore me ^^ I don’t like cheating. But I do like security. I don’t mind a bit of latency anyway. Thanks for the advicea though!

I have found that a lot of VPN filters to not always work. Whenever I get a screen that says blocked for using a VPN I can usually get past it just by changing my location a few times. It might also make sense to try a different provider since they are gonna have a different set of IP addresses.
