After years of promises of implementing playlists and quietly removing it from their featured to do list, id like to see what alternative yall could recommend thats equally permanent and allows you to create playlists?

By permanent i mean that with freetube, i dont have much fear that it will suddenly go dark like an invidious instance, id like to have something similar with an alternative if possible.

any help is highly appreciated.

I know you mentioned invidious going dark, but self hosting it is a piece of cake honestly so you don’t have to worry about the flakiness of other people’s servers. And the script is so easy to use. I ran this for a long time on a Rock64 with 1GB of RAM with no issues until I switched to Proxmox.

if you have exactly the 6 system they mention (the script hates distros) than it may or may not work as for selfhosting, which i did with invidious before feels even more unstable and shaky than a public instance, how do i know my little piece of shit ip isnt gonna be banned for one reason or another, or that invidious keeps working since it hasnt received a proper new release since 2019

Invidious is constantly updated and new releases posted. If you’re looking at github for your release info, they’ve moved to quay long ago. I’m currently on 2023.11.04-438467f6 @ master. Tell me what you were hosting it on before and what you think you would be hosting it on now and maybe I can help if you feel you had problems in the past. It has come a long way since 2019. Also, do you have a link to your IP’s TOS? I can look over it really quick and see if they would have a problem with it.

i dont really care about my ip so i have little worry there, they dont care

i always have problems trying to selfhost literally anything, invidious was the only thing that ever worked and that was only thanks to the automated docker image they have (which i think was from the same site?) and docker im iffy about to use again cause trying to move your data is a nightmare, copy folders didnt work as i was told and im not even gonna attempt any docker command beyond compose up to get that data, cause i simply do not understand it enough to actually try to use them

if there is an actually easy way to move data form docker images i would love to know and ill try invidious again

thank you for wanting to help!

No problem. I will say one thing for future reference regarding Docker though, if you want to have persistent data or move data or keep data around so that it can be mounted to another container, volumes are what accomplishes this. If using a docker command for starting a container, make sure you either create a volume first or the command includes the option to create a volume and mount it. If using compose, you want a volume block within the compose file to store your persistent data. This will make your life much easier.

i frankly did not understand anything you just said, let alone how to accomplish this the article you mentioned seems to require a lot more understanding than i have, cause i cant fully comprehend what they are telling me entirely either

Well if you are really interested there are free docker courses like learndocker.online that can help.

Greyjay is great, but only mobile app sadly, no hosted browser version.

For now I just have piped to save playlists in (you dont even need an account for that) but every instance I’ve tried goes dark more and more often each month. Great alternative and I wish all the best to everyone working on it, including the hosters but Freetube works pretty much without issues for many months now.

with freetube, i dont have much fear that it will suddenly go dark like an invidious instance

except that a change on Youtube’s backend can definitely make it go dark all of a sudden. it happens every now and then with Newpipe.

perhaps, but freetube as far as i remember had that issue noticeably only once? and im not sure if it was that even

This is a frustration. I’m sure there’s a fork with play lists. One second…

No. I am sorry. I must be wrong. It might have been a newpipe fork.

thank you for your effort, i actually tried going through newpipe on my phone, but as you might imagine, this became increasingly frustrating as a pc user

There are many requests to get them to sync, and I believe that eventually, it will happen.

a random list of services doesnt really help me much imo, i was specifically asking for your personal opinion on which would serve these needs

That’s all there really is. It’s easy enough to just try these. I’ve been looking to set up a local piped instance but the android app still needs some work.

I’m not aware of any other usable tool worth using apart from yt-dlp’ing everything and watching locally I guess?

peertube also is extremely empty on most instances and setting it up is a nightmare
