Meta has officially confirmed its decision to introduce a subscription plan for ad-free access to Instagram and Facebook for users in the European Union, EEA, and Switzerland. This move comes a few weeks after Meta first considered the idea, amidst regulatory pressure from the EU regarding the company’s ad targeting and data gathering practices.

The subscription plan is priced at €9.99 per month for web users, while iOS and Android users will have to pay €12.99 per month. Users who opt not to subscribe can still use the services for free, but will continue to see targeted ads.

Until March 1, 2024, the initial subscription will cover all linked accounts in a user’s Accounts Center. However, from March 1, 2024, an additional fee of €6 per month for web users and €8 per month for iOS and Android users will be charged for each extra account listed in a user’s Account Center.

Facebook average revenue per user (ARPU) as of 2nd quarter 2023, by region (in U.S. dollars)

Q2 '23 :

  • US: 53.53
  • Europe: 17.88
  • Worldwide: 10.63

Lol. Twattish, petulant attempt at “malicious compliance” when advertising was never the issue, just don’t track people without their fucking consent.

It’s not though, were the 1%, “normal” people don’t care about privacy, most don’t even grasp the concept. It’s the ads for them. Cambridge Analytica taught nothing.

For Facebook, use Frost. For Instagram: Aeroinsta.

LOL! You say that with a straight face? Once all the cash shit starts you seriously expect that shit to keep working?

I fail to see the logic in people using 3rd party clients and thinking they’re not still feeding these companies data.

If you care so much about privacy, you shouldn’t use Facebook at all. But for me, Frost has made Facebook useable at least. And it works now. Once it doesn’t, I’ll get rid of it

Agreed, and fair enough.

I bet they’re still gonna track the shit out of the paying subscribers

They never specified this subscription removing anything but ads, soooo

yeah, absolutely

Whatever, I already have uBlock for Facebook and Instander for insta. Already got no ad for free

That’s only one of two aspects.

If they share your data to show you ads and you block ads, they still processed and shared your data.

and if you pay them to not show you ads, rest assured that they will still process and share your data.

This seems like an insane price. I’m generally not opposed to ad-based services offering an optional subscription to remove ads, but holy shit. $13 / mo. for social media? Fuck the hell off.

Yea ad-based services should provide paid, ad-free alternatives imo, but this pricing is a joke

I suspect they would if it was regulated they had to (and the fines they’d get if they don’t were sufficiently large). And the experience of simply not seeing ads could be worth a few bucks anyway

But yes, I don’t particularly trust Meta, nor value their services enough to pay $

There was a thread on here that I now can’t find that worked out that, based on monies from advertising/number of users this price structure is indeed an insane price.

I can’t find any clarification on the details of this either. Is it per service? So 10/13 euros pm for FB and another 10/13 for Insta?

And if you access either via desktop and mobile do you have to pay for both?

I figure you’d pay via google pay/apple pay on mobile and FB doesn’t wanna take the loss for those fees.

Nice move Meta, you just cemented my decision to leave Facebook / Meta for good. Thanks!

Breathe the free air again, my friend.

Hah, yeah. Like others, I already use uBlock, and I don’t really use Facebook any more. On the other hand, I’m worried about the social implications of not using FB and Messenger. I’ve been planning to move to secure messaging apps, but it almost feels like you’re not a human if you don’t have FB. In that regard, I found switching my email provider easier. But I’ll remove my account eventually, more likely sooner than later.

Yep. I never got into the facebook thing (tried and failed to enjoy it enough to continue) and people get really sodding rude about the choice. Even suggesting using eMail or Telegram for communication leads to mild abuse at best. It is possible to live without Facebook, it just isn’t very easy, and people see it as a licence to be rude. Seeing as inside facebook they are rude also, I don’t feel I’m missing much, and it has led to a better life for me long term.

I assure you, life persists post-social media :) I quit almost a decade ago and felt no difference. Same friends. Same events
