Sometimes I want to get updates on a news story, and it’s small or local so the coverage is sparse. I’d like to get an alert when a new news story or social media post is published.
I think google has something like this. A more private or self hosted one would be nice

Privacy has become a very important issue in modern society, with companies and governments constantly abusing their power, more and more people are waking up to the importance of digital privacy.
In this community everyone is welcome to post links and discuss topics related to privacy.
Some Rules
- Posting a link to a website containing tracking isn’t great, if contents of the website are behind a paywall maybe copy them into the post
- Don’t promote proprietary software
- Try to keep things on topic
- If you have a question, please try searching for previous discussions, maybe it has already been answered
- Reposts are fine, but should have at least a couple of weeks in between so that the post can reach a new audience
- Be nice :)

Doesn’t RSS do the trick?
I’m not familiar with how I’d set that up. I usually find an existing RSS feed and follow it
edit: haven’t used Google Alerts in a while. Looks like you can have it send an email without tying it to your account. That should work fine
some mail clients, like thunderbird, can also handle rss feed, you then have an all-in-one solution.
