If you don’t like Google’s practices, stop using Google. It’s silly to be upset when they change rules to favor themselves. Go somewhere that respects you. Sure, .ost alternatives have less content, but it won’t grow without more users.
Yep. People in general have an aversion to doing anything that encourages positive change if it is too inconvenient to how they have become accustom to doing things.
Companies like Alphabet are very aware of this fact. Once the limits of the push back becomes a few weeks of bitching online then everyone gets back to using the products and services, there is no reason to listen to the complaints of the users.

YouTube videos being compared to a necessity like air is absolutely childish. That’s an entirely different concept and it’s only possible if you don’t do what I just suggested. So you’re basically fighting for that future. Good job. Maybe watch less YouTube? Books still exist. Many people get by in life just fine without being glued to a screen.

To be fair, that could only happen if you stick to that mentality.
If it were an ideal free market with an infinite amount of competitor, you’d be right. That logic ceases to function in a monopolistic context. In the case of YouTube it’s not “go to the competition” because there’s none. It’s “stop watching online videos”, which is still possible but a huge shift in habits, hobbies, and cultural environment. It’s extremely difficult and only a tiny minority will succeed because human’s psychology is a real thing.
It’s watch different videos. It’s petitioning your favorite creators to join a different platform. Get them to post videos on both platforms or something. That you think it’s just giving up and not doing anything is silly. How sad is the future if no one is willing to try for anything better anymore because it’s not comfortable? Damn.

What is the alternative to youtube? Daily motion?
More and more YT-creators are parallel uploading on Odysee, Mental Outlaw or Cold Fusion as examples. I really hope more will follow.
It has nowhere near the same amount of users compared to daily motion, Vimeo, etc., but Odysee is a closer “alternative” to YouTube in the sense that it has a very similar interface and functionality to YouTube. It has a lot to address in terms of promoting more diverse content and addressing how toxic the comments can be. A lot of the content creators are people that also run youtube channels. There’s still so much more incentive to stick with YouTube, both as viewers and creators. It’s still very, very far away from contending with YouTube, if ever.
Odysee is an alternative in the same way that parler is technically an alternative to twitter.
But most sane people stay far away.
Well, that’s my point. Any social media platform is an alternative to Twitter just as any video sharing platform is an alternative to YouTube.
In reality, any “alternative” platform is hardly an alternative if it’s attempting to replace something that is among the most visited websites globally with billions of users. Most people don’t want to deal with the inconvenience of using an obscure service for the sake of privacy or any other principle.
I only mentioned Odyssey because it’s interface is very similar to YouTube, which is important if you want people to switch. Of course, any service without corporate backing and momentum largely driven by major platforms is not going to be replacing any platforms that have already established themselves as the de facto service within its platform.

I’ve been watching Nebula for a while. They have quite a few of my favorite channels, exclusive content, no ads and they’re fairly inexpensive.
I’ve considered it but the max filesize for dailymotion is 2 gigabytes so that might pose some issues for people.
I dunno, there’s a couple out there. But you vote with your wallet(edit: or your personal data). If you don’t like what they’re doing, stop using it. Using it is simply condoning the practice.
Edit: I don’t really watch much online video outside of paid services. So I don’t have a direct answer. Sure, it’s easier for me to avoid, but that’s going to always be the case for someone for anything.
So you have no dog in this fight but you’re fine telling everyone to just leave. Not very useful.
But it’s true. If you keep using the service, it won’t change. Why would it? If you give in every time, they have no reason to stop. I have no dog in the game so I can view this objectively. You clearly can’t. You are emotionally attached to the service and can’t give it up no matter how it abuses you. I used to use Google. I do not anymore. No more Gmail. I actually pay for my email service.
Even if you stop using it, it still won’t change.
Because the vast majority of people are uninformed or don’t care enough to move, so a stupidly large amount of content is only accessible on YouTube.
Individual action is ineffective.

Edit: Facebook used to make Twitter look like a laughing stock. Tables turned. Facebook used to be where the youth congregated on social media. Things changed. Individual action taken by lots of people will work.
I didn’t say just give up. But understand what is being asked with the suggestion of “just don’t use YouTube”.
Also text-based social media is going to be less expensive to disrupt than video.
I’m not saying it’s impossible. But “don’t use YouTube” is kinda not an answer. Maybe supporting creators on alternative platforms is a good idea.

That sucks. But shit happens. You either support Google or you don’t. There’s no “I support them when they have something I want.”
You don’t support google by watching content hosted by them when they don’t get revenue nor statistics from it. That is purely just making use of it.
Only if you never mention the content’s subject matter otherwise you will drive traffic there, regardless of how you consumed it. You drive up desire for the content. A vegan can use a secondhand leather belt and not contribute to animal cruelty, but it may drive someone else to want a leather belt.
